Shhmoakesy’s Gourmet Pies are now available from here so I dropped in to try a couple. This review is mostly about the pies but the staff were also very nice. Pie review follows. I had a trip back to Newy today so I thought I would go a little out of my way to finally try a Shhmoakesy’s pie. I arrived at the Sherwood Café at 10.30 and the pie oven was empty. Boo. They said they would have some hot in about 10 minutes so I dropped back a little later to a full oven. Yay. I chose a cheese & bacon pie and a Jalapeno and cheese. They were too hot to eat straight away so I drove half an hour towards my next job and pulled up at Fern Bay. For some waterside pie eating. The cheese and bacon was a good size at 281g. It had a good solid base despite the foil tray and was well constructed. The filling was really, really salty. Way too salty. I was very disappointed given their reputation. You could say I was salty. It is unfortunate because the flavour was almost really good and there was lots of great meat pieces, bacon and cheese. Overall, I would rate this pie a 6/10. Next up, the Jalapeno and cheese. This pie was a little smaller but still a good size at 249g. Once it was out of the foil, the base was a little soft and threatened to split open on the bottom but did hold together in the end. The flavour of this pie was superb and I had finished it off before I had a chance to get a photo of the inside. It had enough jalapenos and cheese and the meat was delicious. A solid 8/10...
Read moreCame for eat in, the 'advertised lemon poppyseed cake was a stale cruffin type thing and very dry. Daughters brownie was nice she said. Food came ten mins before 1st drink arrived- it was a strawberry matcha but it just tasted like strawberry OAk milk had been used with a tiny amount of matcha- worst my duaghter has had in Newcastle. Another 15 minutes had past we had finished food and her drink and still waiting for my iced dirty chai latte. People who came in after us had been served drinks and takeaway food and left, I asked the waitress and she said she did not know where it was or what had happened- she never came back. A few minutes later my daughter hopped up and asked the counter staff who seemed confused and kept looking at tix and i-pad. I had paid already so knew it had been ordrered. I hopped up then to ask what the problem was and they said "nothing" , I informed them how long I had been wating and that we were ready to leave as our dine in option had been ruined by their poor service as well as the flies everywhere in the cafe. I was given my drink then to takeaway, which had no chai in it from what I could tell, no apology . Will not return- I think this 'chain' coffee shop is too big now. Should have gone to Pegs instead, much better quaity and...
Read moreEaster Saturday and looking forward to a good long Long Black from this place after what’s been written in the media. Grainy brown water that left a scummy tide mark around the cup. The beans in the hopper looked dry and poorly maintained. Gave my feedback and got a full refund. Which wasn’t expected but a nice gesture. Left with not a pleasant aftertaste and went home to brush my teeth and have an instant coffee. Will try Parry Street outlet and see if any better before passing final judgement. May or may not come back to Kahiba - not sure I want to take chance of another bad coffee - especially when it’s expensive. May be this place makes mostly milky takeaway coffee and so you won’t notice what’s inside the cup. If I chance it again I’ll update this review. Such a shame considering...
