Brought our family from NZ to the hideaway tonight. What an absolute embarrassment. What used to be a decent place to eat and is now the ONLY place to eat in Tiaro. We could see when we turned up there was a few people in and about six people before us in the line up to order. There were 7 people and a child in our party. We did call first to book in and they told us just to come on in. Two of our party ordered separately and before the other 6. While we ordered, we watched the owner micromanage the girl taking orders and get her all flustered and we wonder whether this is where our night actually went wrong.. They let us know they didn’t have vegetables and that they only had chips and salad to accompany our meals. And we coped all that. With no drama. However… An hour and a half it took before our meals come out. We watched people come, eat and go. People who order AFTER us come eat and go. When our food came to the table it was missing three meals. Two were from the couple from our party who ordered FIRST and separately and one from our order. When we questioned where the 6th meal was from our order we were told it was never ordered. It was. The two other meals turned up 20 mins after the first lot of food was placed. I would not recommend this place to anyone. It was EXTREMELY disappointing. The meal that never turned up was for the member of the family who was from NZ. We all heard her order the meal. She was the reason we went there to begin with. Sadly her order was never taken. Really not a good example of Australian people or hospitality. It was terribly upsetting. The ONLY good thing I can say is that we were refunded for the meal that...
Read moreVisited while passing through on a weekend and only because the pub on the highway itself was displaying a notice that their kitchen was not functioning.
The venue is distinctly old and dated, as any "historical" building is likely to be. It's a shame though that they haven't brought at least some of their general functionality into the 21st century. On the day we visited the great Australian weather was putting on a full show of force with a steaming hot day. The inside dining area was hot and humid. The venue lacked air-conditioning and the ceiling fans were not running. The staff turned them on at request but they did nothing to move the air around, and served only to dislodge dust and the standard aroma of old buildings.
The food, as evidenced by the "lunch size" Chicken Parmigiana pictured was disappointing in the least. The chicken schnitzel, was as big as 3 chips. An almost laughable experience for the prices.
The service was very slow, with a single person manning the bar and taking restaurant orders. The kitchen did manage to get the food out together so the problems appear to be tied purely to the business decision makers. All patrons left feeling disappointed with no real desire to return which is sad when character locations such as this rely on either word of mouth recommendations, or more commonly these days reviews...
Read moreHow disappointing. I rarely make reviews but I made an exception for this venue. It’s a lovely old country pub with heaps of potential but the food is terrible and to top it off it wasn’t cheap. I got the parmi with veg ($32) and my wife got the curried prawn ($25). It’s hard to describe what came out. I wish I took photos. The parmi was supposed to be the large size. I would have loved to have seen the small parmi. The chicken was reheated and topped with a tomato cheese goo. Reheated frozen vegetables and boiled cabbage. The meal included a stale bread triangle that makes the meal look tacky. The curries prawn was a bowl of white rice and one spoon of curry in the middle. The curry contained two small prawn halves and a few of those tiny peeled prawns you get on a cheap pizza. The taste of both meals was very ordinary. The kitchen needs a complete overhaul. I can’t understand how some others in Google are giving the food good reviews as I reckon the meals we got were pretty standard. The lady serving the bar was nice and she asked if we enjoyed the meal. We said “okay”. She sensed we were not happy. We figured she must get it a lot. We will not be returning. My advice is to keep driving if you are looking...
