Bless you May and the team at AJ’s for taking us in on Christmas Day so close to closing. We cannot be more grateful for the hospitality you showed us while I was so physically ailed, and unable to attend any Christmas gathering that day. I desperately needed nourishment, and everything directly local was closed. But it wasn’t a problem for the Chefs or May, who were just so wonderfully accommodating. When we work in service, we often don’t realise the effect we have on others, but the service given can sometimes make or break the customer’s day. I am so incredibly grateful that May was there to help organise food and drinks with grace, friendliness and good cheer!!! We tried to offer a gift to express how extremely grateful we were, but it was accepted instead that we would write a review, and make sure that we bring our parents to enjoy the restaurant. It was an easy promise to make - the food is FANTASTIC! We will come back asap!! We knew what to expect food-wise as we had ordered home delivery on previous occasions, but don’t EVER order take-away my friends, GO THERE! The hot food soothes the soul, is genuine, great portion size and absolute value for money. The samosas are crispy and the right spice/heat level, banana and coconut fresh, and the mint sauce just perfectly made. Not to mention freshly made naan and chicken in the tandoor. But most of all friends - please go for the service. With the rising cost of living, it’s hard for businesses who need to pass on food costs and staff costs - please just go there. Order something extra to make everyone’s time there enjoyable and worthwhile. Its a family business and they treat everyone as an extention on that family. Cannot sing the praises more highly - I wish AJ’s restaurant, the staff, the team and May a very prosperous...
Read moreA.J's has gone through a number of management changes over the years, which has meant not only has the quality changed but the offerings too. The first owner, A.J himself I believe set up a fantastic restaurant that was booked out every weekend. Years later we decided to have dinner with what I think is a second change since A.J. left, and we were really pleasant;y impressed. We ordered the paneer tikka and tikki chaat. These were absolutely Delicious and I certainly recommend it. The paneer is smokey, tangy and super soft served up on a sizzling plate. Seriously the smell is just divine. The tikki chaat is smooth and a little spicy complimented by the yogurt and tamarind sauce. For the mains we ordered the baignan tamatar (eggplant and tomato), paneer mirch masala (spicy paneer), butter chicken and malai kofta (soft kofta's in a creamy sauce). The eggplant dish was smooth and smokey, with enough tang from the tomato, which the paneer was cream yet spicy. The butter chicken was delicious, with the sweet gravy tasting wonderful. The malai kofta was just as lovely, and is a very mild option. The 4 together were a really great balance of tang, spice, creamy, sweet and smokey too. We ordered garlic naans, plain naans, and roti's to compliment the meals - and these were perfectly soft! Service was really lovely here and all the waitstaff were super helpful. We even got some kulfi on the house since we were celebrating a birthday! Definitely want...
Read moreAJ's is hands-down my favourite restaurant in Sydney. The food is amazing, the service is great, and it has a warm, cozy atmosphere (it's not huge or high end, but it's also not pretentious). Sanjay and his wife are quite friendly and welcoming. They always make appoint to chat with everyone and get a sense of what dishes they would enjoy. And they remember you :-) It has been my first choice for special events for years (graduation, marriage, anniversary, birthdays, etc).
The food is well priced and a solid meal with entrees, mains, drinks, and a desert (if you have the room) will cost you less than $40-$50 a person, and it is absolutely worth it. I highly recommend the entree platter and take the curry with pilau rice and garlic naan. The prawn five-spice curry is to die for. If you like it hot, I recommend the beef vindaloo - dark, rich, and spicy. I cry tears of happiness every time I order it. They have a great selection of dishes, including vegetarian dishes that even a hardened carnivore can't ignore. They introduce new dishes and occasionally I'll leave it up to Sanjay to surprise me... and he has never failed. If you have a large group, get the banquet. It's inexpensive and there is a good variety of food for everyone.
Book a table, BYO wine from the bottle-shop across the street, and make a night of it - you will not be...
