I have been a loyal El Jannah customer for years. I like the delicious food, store cleanliness and overall good experience. I have also brought many people to the store to support this local business.
On 10 April at 12.35pm, my client and I were at the store to order lunch. We are both deaf, and placed our orders like any other day. My client's lunch came to a total of $22, which was more than she could afford, so she told the young woman behind the counter that she did not want this order. Instead, she wanted to order one of the box meal deals from the board. Simple right?
The employee, a young woman, without a name badge behind the counter started to laugh then turned her face away and put it under her shirt laughing uncontrollably, looking at us and away again. My client can speak English and I am told has good speech. We were both stunned and shocked by this employee's behaviour and customer service..
This unacceptable behaviour showed a lack of respect to us as customers. As deaf people, we were embarrassed and humiliated. The impact of this behaviour on both of us was exacerbated because it was in front of other customers.
The staff member walked away from us, we watched her as she found a second worker. This woman, also without a name badge, arrived at the counter to serve us. We do not know what the first staff member said to the second staff member before she arrived at the counter. My client acknowledged the second worker, placed her lunch order then this staff member burst out laughing. This disrespect made my client and I more upset and angry, then she swore at the workers.
I could not believe this ongoing disrespect. I yelled at them "We are deaf. Why are you laughing and so rude? Where is the manager" Then they both ran away from the counter to hide. We waited but we could not see them and they did not return to the counter.
All of this happened in front of other customers at lunch time. One of the customers standing next to us showed support by looking us then at the staff by shaking her head in disbelief about the bad way they treated us.
By this time, we were both so upset and walked out of the store without lunch. This stung us, so it took some time for us to calm down. The behaviour from both El Jannah staff members means that this is not a respectful, safe and welcoming space for deaf people.
We want an apology for the lack of respect, discriminatory treatment, hurt, embarrasment and poor customer service.
We want all El Jannah staff to have "Deaf and disability awareness training", so that all staff provide non-discriminatory service to Deaf and disabled people.
I look forward to hearing from the owners of El Jannah to resolve...
