The establishment could benefit significantly from a thorough cleaning; the tables and chairs showed clear signs of wear, indicating they hadn’t been maintained in quite some time. Dust gathered in the corners, and a few crumbs remained on the seats, which detracted from the overall ambiance. While the food presentation was truly impressive—colorful, artfully arranged, and visually appealing—the flavors unfortunately didn’t live up to that initial wow factor. My first bite revealed an overwhelming blandness that overshadowed the quality of the ingredients. The dishes desperately needed a thoughtful touch of seasoning; they lacked the vibrant flavors that could elevate them from the ordinary to the exceptional. Particularly disappointing was the burnt Basque cheesecake. the taste left much to be desired. I had anticipated a delightful combination of creamy texture, gentle sweetness, and a hint of bitterness, but what I got was a lackluster version of that flavor profile. The burnt, caramelized crust, which should have imparted a complex taste reminiscent of crème brûlée or crème caramel, felt flat and underwhelming, and certainly not fresh. To add to the overall letdown, the coffee I ordered also missed the mark. Rather than delivering the robust, rich flavor I had hoped for, it tasted watered down and lacked the depth typically found in a well-brewed cup. Overall, this experience left me with the impression that while the venue has the potential for a fantastic dining experience, it desperately needs improvements in both the quality of the food and the cleanliness of the space.

I had the worst customer service experience here in the past 20 years…. I didn’t know that having a coffee would end in abuse. I explicitly asked for a 3/4 long black in a takeaway cup. It was brought in a dine in cup, and when I asked to be given the correct order I watched the barista and waitress pour the old, cold coffee into a takeaway cup and top it up with boiling water… When I showed my dissatisfaction with that, the waitress returned to the counter, rolled her eyes and started discussing me with the barista. They began to look over at me and laugh. The disrespectful barista who I have attached a photo of should not work front of house, he clearly has severe anger issues. I wonder, if they hate people so much, why choose a hospitality role? Consulting a therapist should be considered… When I was brought the wrong coffee for the third time, my daughter personally got up and asked the barista directly for 3/4 full. After clearly deliberately receiving a full cup for the fourth time I left this ridiculous deli. Also, this is also not the first time I have seen cockroaches in this venue… may be worth conducting a hygiene analysis. This will make a great article about dreadful customer service in Time Out! If you are looking to have a side of bullying with your cold, bitter coffee I highly recommend Envy Deli - something to be envious about for sure!

Envy Deli Cafe was a somewhat shocking return to Sydney prices after three and a half weeks on Pasifikan islands. Even without a mortgage, adding some much-needed Aussie bacon ($6) to my zucchini feta fritters ($22.50) did make it feel extortionate. Topped with a single poached egg, the fritters were fluffy and substantial with well-executed Hollandaise, a few sprigs of rocket and a smear of house-made tomato relish. Supplementing chilli scrambled eggs ($21.50) with an excellent Rodriguez chorizo ($6) protein hit again moved us beyond Sydney’s famous eat-smashed-avocado-and-you-can’t-afford-a-house index. However once again, against buttered (praise be) sourdough and wilted spinach, this breakfast ate nicely. Small, strong Toby’s Estate flat whites ($5/each) tasted great after island coffee, but I suspect most anything would. Where I do draw the line however was with the chicken and mushroom pies ($13/each) plucked from a nicely abundant cake counter. They looked appetising, had good fillings full of plump hunks of chicken breast in creamy mushroom sauce, but the super-short pastry was awful, both in flavour and crumbly, dry execution. Once bitten, twice as quick to go back to eating breakfast from our restocked fridge and pantry at home.

Envy Café is an absolute gem that has quickly become my go-to spot for both coffee and a delicious meal. Their coffee is simply outstanding, with a rich, robust flavor that rivals any specialty coffee shop. Each cup is brewed to perfection, making it a delightful experience every time.

The food at Envy Café is equally impressive. The menu offers a variety of delicious options that cater to all tastes, from hearty breakfast dishes to light, healthy lunches.
