Maeda Japanese Restaurant — Restaurant in Sydney

I came to Maeda with my girlfriend and our four children, excited for a local dinner out, but left feeling very uncomfortable and unwelcome. Despite the kids being pretty well-behaved and dining at a family friendly hour, the atmosphere the restaurant created made it clear that we were not wanted. The most disappointing moment was when the owner entered the bathroom whilst our two older children were in there and asked them to leave before they were finished, to be told that other guests needed the bathroom and they would need to use it after. This was extremely inappropriate and unnecessary and made us and our children feel very uncomfortable. We then immediately paid the bill and left without anyone apologising for this situation.

Paddington is full of young families who love to dine locally, and it’s a shame Maeda doesn’t seem to welcome...

Big disappointment. We ordered here last night for the first time and we couldn’t even finish it. The pictures don’t match the reality. We felt totally cheated.

The wagyu beef tataki was dried, hard and completely over cooked (totally the opposite of what a tataki is supposed to be). The portions were ridiculously thin and tiny. The aburi salmon roll was hard, dried and tasteless. The pork buns were completely hard and seemed they had been made from a few days. It was quite shocking to see a bum like that to be honest. The cauliflower was just a cauliflower sinked in sauce. Nothing special.

I tried Maeda for the first time last night and honestly, it was the best sushi I have had in my life! Made fresh to order with beautiful, generous ingredients and so fresh and exquisite. There was clearly a lot of care and attention to detail put into the food and a focus on creating a terrific customer experience. Even during a difficult lockdown period, when I went to pick up my order, the chefs looked so happy and dedicated to their craft.
