Hides Bakery — Restaurant in Victoria

Stopped in on Sunday morning two weeks ago for takeaway coffee and takeaway bacon and egg rolls for two, on way to work at 8:30am. Was told 20 minutes wait on the rolls as they were very busy. There were 10 other people in the bakery, some already eating. There were three staff behind counter and one out the back.

Was surprised that order totalled more than $40.

40 minutes later I went inside to ask whether my rolls were nearly ready, only to be told they hadn't started them yet and they would be another 20 minutes. One staff member had spent the entire time putting filled rolls and foccacias in the display case the whole time I was waiting. Some containing freshly cooked bacon?!

I'm a takeaway customer in hi-vis gear clearly on the way to work on a Sunday morning, what sort of customer service is 1 hour turnaround on bacon and egs rolls. No apology offered, just reasserted how busy they were. They weren't busy.

One of the intrinsic hospitality skills is to prioritise customers, including take-away.

I asked for a refund on the rolls, and the refund took over 5 minutes to process. I still needed something for lunch so got pies instead, couldn't believe they're more than $7-$8 each.

This bakery looks nice but offers bad service, no communication to customers of any delays, no recognition or prioritising of take-away customers, and very overpriced, products. The Danish my partner bought wasn't even cooked, raw dough throughout.

We visited this bakery at 1pm on a Friday afternoon, the place was packed with people eating and lined to order. By the time we got to order the pies we wanted were sold out, so I ordered a beef and burgundy pie plus a plain steak pie. I then asked if they had chocolate donuts because I couldn't see any and was told they had sold out first thing in the morning 🙄. They only had two other fruit scrolls left so we purchased a coffee scroll instead. God forbid you ever call in here late afternoon or dinner time, drive up and down a packed busy street looking for a park for 30mins only to find a bakery with nothing left to sell 😆

The plain steak pie wasn't steak, back home when you get a steak pie as opposed to a meat pie you get chunky pieces of steak in gravy, not here. The plain steak was just your average meat pie with minced meat and gravy, kind of bland with a bland crust.

The beef and burgundy actually had chunks of beef which was slightly redeeming but other than some chunky tomato and onions had no hint of burgundy taste anywhere, compared to the "steak" pie it was tasty but didn't really live up to its name.

The last resort coffee scroll was the only good experience had coming to this bakery, soft sweet and delicious.

Unfortunately it wasn't enough to make me think I'd ever return to this bakery again, no idea why it was so busy other than the cakes and obviously chocolate donuts being the real mvp's if you were lucky enough to get here in the morning, the alternative bakeries in town must be...

The food is nice but honestly the customer service is an enormous put off. We’ve come here a few times and each time our experience is worse. The staff ALL speak with incredibly soft voices and it’s so hard to understand them. I find them to be inefficient and slow. More than once I’ve ordered a focaccia which I’ve asked to be not toasted just cut in half but they disappear to the back to cut it?? Why not just cut in on the bench where no one is using it? It’s not a quick process either and we’re waiting far longer than it should take. Today I ordered a sandwich and the girl was preparing it so I asked another person if I could order coffee (it takes such a looooong time to get coffee here whether it’s busy or empty). I wanted the coffee order to be in so I wasn’t delayed in waiting for all the other orders that were coming through the door. For whatever reason this girl said no and I had to wait for my sandwich to be done??? Back in Easter I ordered an apple strudel and the dough wasn’t cooked through.
