Lantern Palace — Restaurant in Victoria

I finished my meal tonight... feeling disappointed. I ordered to take-away, Sweet & Sour Pork, Satay Beef with Seasonal Vegetables, and 2x Large Special Fried Rice. The young lady at the counter was friendly and had terrific customer service. The lady who brought my food out was also friendly as she passed me my food. However...

Sweet & Sour Pork - I have been to dozens of Chinese Food Outlets, including Sydney and Melbourne. They always do 1 of 2 things; my favourite is when they mix the sauce with the pork, so all I need to do is stab. The other is that they seperate the pork and sauce into two containers, allowing you to either pour it over, or dip and eat. Never have I seen a restaurant mix the sauce and pork... sauce first, and so little at that. At first I thought they forgot to give me sauce, turns out there was a layer 5mm thick at the bottom. I had to move pork out of the way so I could do the most awkward dip and eat game ever, had to roll the pork over the sauce to layer it with sauce, at least a little. Flavours were spot on, but the pork made up 99% of the dish... a good ratio is 80-20 and if you mix the two, you pour the sauce over the pork, not the other way around... it's wrong.

Satay Beef w/ Seasonal Vegetables - Flavours were... correct... but it wasn't very enthusiatic. And the vegetables were so boiled through that they were too soft and turned to moosh.

Special Fried Rice - This one was just plain average. All the flavour elements of the ingredient were there but... the rice was overcooked and flooded, resulting in the rice being fairly... mooshy. And there was no deep tone to the fried rice; it's meant to be savoury, it's meant to a series of different ingredients that blended together... this was heavy, but it wasn't deep. This is likely because the chef flooded the rice, washing away the grease (the good kind).

Overrall... it wasn't terrible here, it wasn't terrific either... I just feel disappointed. The food is edible, has some flavour... but it was not enjoyable and didn't give me an experience.

I apologise to the owners and staff if this review offends or upsets you, but this is how I feel. If you want to know what I'm talking about with the rice, eat a fork of yours, then eat a fork of Fen's Takeaway's Fried Rice in Lakes Entrance... you'll notice yours was missing something.

Anyway, I hope this review helps future customers, and helps the owners and kitchen staff understand where they...

Once again I cannot fault this restaurant. I brought my Uncle here to dine with us and the meal was delicious. My Uncle has travelled the world extensively as a reporter and he was very impressed. His comment was and I quote "this is one of the best Chinese restaurants I've eaten in and I have eaten in many all over the world". Coming from Uncle Doug, that is an extremely high compliment and recommendation of the Lantern palace. He has eaten in more restaurants than I've had dinners. Anyway last night I made the big mistake of trying one of the other Chinese establishments, which will remain nameless. I bought take away, drove all the way home to Bruthen and it was disgusting. I got back in the car, drove back to Bairnsdale, returned the slop I had purchased and ordered a takeaway dinner from the Lantern Palace! I will never make that error again!!!! We moved to Traralgon in Gippsland 3yrs ago and have been searching for our new Chinese restaurant, blah to all the soup slop in Traralgon. We moved to Bruthen and I am very pleased to say we have found it!! WOOHOO!!! I ordered special fried rice, satay beef, honey chicken and fried noodles. It was all cooked to perfection, however I did find my rice slightly salty (no biggy) it could’ve been my tastebuds. My husband ordered special fried rice, beef in black bean and lemon chicken. He is very happy. No more driving to Bacchus Marsh to the Majestic for our Chinese. It used to be a special take out when visiting family and brought home to eat.
