Are you thinking about stopping in for a feed at this alleged fine establishment? Well, let me inform you fine folks.
I went for a drive with my wife and parents. We came across the Lost Watering Hole at Lancefield. My wife decided (due to reviews) to dine there for lunch.
I ordered the pork schnitzel sub, and my father had the chicken peanut satay that came with rice and some other items.
Both items were severely overcooked, being the schnitzel and my dads chicken (dryer than a nuns you know who) the rice required to be cut with a plasma cutter.
The beverages (alcohol related) were delicious, dont get me wrong. But the coffee was so weak my dad described it as 'warm milk'.
My mother and wife ahead of the cheese platter, and all was fine on that front as no cooking was required for the chefs.
We brought the issues up with the older women who cleared the table. And she did not even offer a refund for my father's meal (I was content with mine only for the fact it had slaw and other stuff to mask the burnt tough pork schnitzel). He was met with a smile and was told that she would "tell the chef" and there was no offer to attempt to rectify any unpleasantries that had occurred during the short stay. The customer service is also servely lacking. You get more human interaction from toddlers.
This place needs to seriously have a good look at who it employs to cook for them as these chefs on the day were better suited for a fast food chain. The only thing they did right was bloody brilliant crisp chips.
Only way I see how this place has good reviews and not been pulled up for the food is due to the patrons being over intoxicated that they were oblivious to the burnt/over cooked pile of dung in...
Read moreWe’ve been here 3 times in a week since coming across it. When it’s good, it’s good.
The location is scenic and peaceful. Sitting at the window you look out on leafy trees. It’s easy to find on the main road through Lancefield with comfortable and quiet parking for all vehicle sizes.
The menu is thoughtful and truly caters to everyone. There are vegan cheese options for the many vegetarian pizzas, plenty of other vege dishes too including delicious tofu tacos loaded with flavour. It’s a far cry from the usual “lazy” vege options many other places offer. And lots of choice of course for the meat eaters. We really appreciate the extra effort they’ve gone to with thier food - all the thoughtful use of herbs, spices and sauces to make things so much better. It’s honestly a rare find.
The drinks menu is similarly great. Can’t speak on the beer as it’s not for me, though based on everything else I’m sure it’s top tier. I love all the other options they offer like the house made hard lemonade, craftea, margaritas etc. all for reasonable prices.
If you make it for Happy Hour (4-6pm on a Friday at time of writing), the deals are hard to beat, less than half price for most of the pizzas ($10), and plenty of $5 or $10 drinks to choose from. Pretty sure they have other deals on different days of the week (Tuesday Tacos etc) so it’s worth checking thier social media which is updated frequently.
The staff are friendly, competent, and the food always comes out hot and quick.
All in all, it’s our go-to since moving into the region and so glad to find a place we enjoy so much that is on par with some of the best food and drink VIC...
Read moreParty of three, we all ordered steaks, two porterhouse and a scotch fillet with a bottle of Double Oaks Pinot Noir. After a reasonable time the food appeared. Initial impressions were a tad deflating as there was more plate than food. Where the accompanying mound of veg/chips should have been, appeared an expanse of cold, bare china plate. A lone potato duly crushed sat coagulated, its heat sucked from it, without evidence of any caramelized colour or flavour was presented in front of me with barely warmed Broccolini in an equally frigid side dish. My tiny serve of sauce was offered at ambient temperature and so emulsified and bland, undisguised as straight out of a carton rather than made a la minute as I imagined when ordering a bearnaise. It appeared no attempt had been made to fulfil customary food service standards of heating foods to over the 63 degree threshold. My fellow diners' meals fell short of the mark in similar measures. The steaks... Oh dear. All over cooked and for the price we paid my expectation is that I get a quality grass fed, grass finished trimmed Porterhouse from Cape Grim as described in the menu. This was not the case, although I have no proof and the whole culinary experience can be blamed on the chef's poor mise en place. My friends Scotch Fillet was also suspiciously mis-shaped looking more rump than fillet. Lower your expectations if...
