Hastings Hotel — Restaurant in Wauchope

We researched places to eat in Wauhope and decided that this is where we would have lunch. The menu seemed good and well priced. When we went to order here was one person to take all the orders and get drinks. She had to leave the area 4 times to ask someone what to do regarding the till. I overheard her tell one customer four different answers to the same question, no wonder he was confused. One of our group ordered drinks at the main bar, only one option for sugar free Coke, only post mix machine orange juice and absolutely no sparkling mineral water. so we had no drinks. When we asked for water at the food ordering counter, they guy working there was clearly not impressed, rolled his eyes and got it without saying a word. Yes there were water tap on the bench but without glasses, pretty useless. To top everything off, we were told all orders from here on will be at least an hours wait. What? it wasn't that busy, most people had or were eating already so... needless to say we walked out. We were later told by a local that we probably dodged a bullet as the food is mostly...

Went there today for lunch. I was very quickly greeted by two friendly staff, very nice. I ordered a schooner of Reschs as it was on the Reschs Appreciation Society map. The guy was enthused at my choice as he went to the main bar to get my drink. I ordered bangers and mash and was not disappointed. Both items were excellent value at $23.60 total. The Reschs was 10/10 and the meal was 9/10. I would have given the meal 10/10 except the Reschs was so good. I decided to have a quick donation to the pokies and was disgusted the entire pokie room was smoking, thus my low rating for the atmosphere, solely on that. There was no sign indicating this is a smoking area. Weirdly, they still have VIP signs up for the pokie room, which has been outlawed, might want to take a look at that. Been twice. Once to try and the second time, because my friend wanted to go there. Alas, the food is very average - has that pre-made microwaved look and taste about it and a simple appetiser like their bruschetta, is laughable. It's obvious the cook has never acquainted himself with the real thing and thinks they can just wing it. Staff are generally ok, but atmosphere is too bright and sterile. I get that it's not the place for a romantic dinner, but even still, a bit more thought and creativity on making it feel more like an old school pub would improve it.
