Ruby’s is a popular spot with the morning cycling crowd so if you are there early be prepared to navigate through a plethora of Lycra clad middle aged men and their trusty steads, however, this seems to die down by mid morning and it’s usually not too hard to grab a table on their very large and well sheltered deck or out on the grass with stunning views of Bulli beach and the passing traffic on the bike track.
Service is friendly and has an air of beach side casualness that you would expect from a caravan park cafe location. The cast of Home and Away would not feel out of place hanging at this south coast version of Summer Bay.
The breakfast fare is tasty and well prepared. Poached eggs were runny and deliciously messy. All the ingredients seem to be thoughtfully prepared and fresh.
As with most cafes the old staple of Turkish bread has long since passed its day in favour of the new kid on the block milk bread. It’s a close relative of brioche but not as sweet and used on most of the burgers and rolls at this cafe.
Whilst everyone was happy with their meals our group was not hailing any sort of breakfast revolution. In short the food is great but not amazing. The only criticism would be that servings could be a little bigger for the price of some dishes. The breakfast bruschetta really wanted another egg for the price and maybe two pieces of bread instead of one cut in half.
Initially I thought the $9 asking price for a green smoothie seemed excessive however it was a nice big offering and I was impressed with the flavour and amount. If you like something not too sweet to drink then this is the smoothy for you (it’s actually more of a juice than a smoothy).
All in all worth stopping in for a quick bite and there were no issues from staff with our little puppy dog being in the deck area which scored bonus points 😀.
It is also worth noting that we visited on a public holiday and to their credit did not apply a...
Read moreI was in here yesterday with my wife and 2 children. We ordered $91.93 of breakfast. $18 of that was French toast. No changes to any of the meals - just the French toast. “Can you please put the toppings off to the side? My kid is fussy.” “Just let me ask” Enter owner lady: “We can’t do that. What do you want taken off?” “Nothing. I want them put to the side.” “Can’t do it. Only take things off.” “Take it all off then. Just maple syrup” Exit owner lady. The meal came - with sautéed apple on it. Not only was it too difficult to just leave everything on the side of the plate but even after I asked for everything off - the single piece of French toast was covered in apple. There’s a reason there is several reviews very comparable to mine in that they mention how difficult the owner is. I won’t be coming back ever again just because it’s a place that reminds me of how disgusting people can be. The staff was great - just avoid having to speak to...
Read moreI had lunch at Ruby's on 11/12/2020, and on the same day penned this poem:
Ode to a Haloumi Burger
Placed before me on a plate My burger made me salivate So good and succulent it looked My eyes were absolutely hooked I brought it to my mouth, and then I ate.
And even as I took a bite, Incredulous to bear the sight, I wondered, would it taste as good? It seemed unlikely that it could: Its visage set the bar to such a height.
Kapow! The Heavens let me in! A bliss usurping any sin! My brain unable to compute This scrumptiousness so absolute Transported, I had tingles on my skin.
Ruby’s Cafe, you’re the best! And having found you I feel blessed; Although I live not close to here, I’m certain that I’ll reappear: My heart is...
