Postillions Einkehr — Restaurant in Altaussee

A wonderful restaurant with Austrian cuisine. Menu is relatively small but delicious. Schnitzels are crispy and juicy served with Viennese potato salad which may surprise some people not familiar with it who may be expecting fries but damn it’s good. Simple but delicious and it nicely balances the fried schnitzel (or other fried food they offer - 1/2 chicken, cheese). They also have a cold salad bar with multiple options. White asparagus salad, cabbage salad and potato salad stand out. Cucumber salad is also very tasty. The owner has a cold smoker and he smokes fresh local fish himself. The fish is worth a try. I can also recommend beef broth with pancake noodles which give the soup amazing texture. The portions are big and the prices are reasonable. The owner is kind and friendly and is happy to help you with translating the menu (as they don’t have an english version because it’s written on the blackboard behind the salad bar). Very popular restaurant under the locals. Lovely decoration for a nice atmosphere.

The restaurant is devided into 2 seperate rooms for the non-smokers. I am a non-smoker myself and sat in the smoking area, it did not bother me at all because of the fantastic ventilation.

The food can be ordered at the kitchen, the waiter only takes drinks. One of the waiters speaks excellent English to explain the concept. The food itself will still be brought to the table.

Leider kann ich bei dieser Rezension keine Lobeshymne, weder für den Wirt noch die Bewirtung abgeben und muss mich anderen Feedbacks anschließen! Der Wirt sperrte kommentarlos um 17:00 Uhr auf und fand es nicht wert uns zu begrüßen oder reinzubitten. Als wir als erste Gäste in dem völlig leeren Heurigen um einen Tisch gebeten haben, taxierte er uns regelrecht lange und sagte wenig freundlich, „haben Sie reserviert?er glaube nicht, dass Tische frei seien!!!“ Schließlich hat uns sein Kellner gnädigerweise einen Tisch zugewiesen! Wir wollten nach einem langen Wandertag zum Essen dort einkehren und hatten unsere Wanderbekleidung an. Das es in dem Heurigen einen „dress code“ gibt war uns nicht klar!!! Nach der „freundlichen!!!“Behandlung fühlten wir uns so unwohl, dass wir uns nach Konsumieren eines Getränks entschieden unsere Rechnung zu begleichen und den Heurigen zu verlassen. Nach langen Warten am Tisch mussten wir vorgehen um auf uns aufmerksam zu machen, da während der ganzen Zeit niemand nach uns gesehen hat. Der Chef ließ uns auch dann lange warten, obwohl er neben uns gestanden hat. Bei einem leeren Lokal entzieht sich mir die Sinnhaftigkeit, warum man die Gäste so lange warten lässt.
