Spuds is a wonderful restaurant serving delicious and creative (slow) fast food. It's essentially different toppings on baked potatoes - the toppings we tried cheese-slaw, and the special of the day with squash, tomato pesto and sage were excellent: interesting and very flavorful. The staff were very friendly, taking time to explain how the toppings were cooked, where they get their ingredients (mostly from local farmers) and making pleasant conversation. They have excellent organic beer from the Schlossbrauerei Stein in Bavaria, and a wonderful guest garden in front of the restaurant to enjoy a potato and beer in the sunshine.
This area of Hohenems includes several interesting museums and is being made more pedestrian friendly. New shops and restaurants - like Spuds! - are opening in a very nice historic center with several old hotels/cafes and a large open park in front of the old castle. We ordered the full breakfast which consisted of freshly home made baked beans (very impressive), bubble and squeak (great), wonderfully light toasted baguette slices, some mushrooms and excellent scrambled eggs made with fresh herbs. All excellent. Portions were generous but not excessive.
Highly original food for Austria. Really adds some much needed, high-end, variety to what was a very repetative part of town, that until recently filled only with the mandatory pizza restaurants and bakeries.
Location was brilliant, enough space to relax but right in the centre of the action in the beautifully refurbished old town. Style was elegant bug relaxed with a mix of old and new.

Even the Mayo and Naan breads are made on premises (The Naans are used as the 'buns' in the highly recommended Croc Dogs, try the Hot Croc it is a delight).
