For all the non austrians: wine hiking around vienna, bringing some drinks, have them along the walk with friends is quite popular with younger folk. We had a reservation at this place after our wine hike, arriving with about 10 people. Upon arrival we came and took place at our table, some of us still finishing our own drinks while others where at the self service, ordering food and drinks for everyone in the realms of upwards 200 euros. Not one minute upon arrival, a greedy man, supposedly the owner, came up to us and started shouting and said we have to leave, took the umbrella of our table, for the rudeness of not downing our drinks at the entrance like we were just walking through a security section of a concert. A friend that just came back with plates of food and wine calmly tried to talk the person into reason, but the hatred towards us was so strong we left willingly. On our way out, I saw the men also shouted at one of his staff.
I see the concern of people bringing their own stuff, but as we were just coming in from our hike, and had our unfinished drinks, a heads up that it is not welcome would have been sufficient. The situation would have resolved itself within 5 minutes in any case. Seeing other comments that they even freak out at people because children eat nuts and berries, it is pretty obvious to me for what reason they are in the ,,hospitality’’ business. In the end this is still a Buschenschank, using a self service system and tokens to return dishes yourself. If you are like me and don’t want to fill the ever lasting greed of some people, do yourself a favour and just check out some of the other places around the hill. This one is the most expensive anyways and others have...
Read moreI've had the pleasure of eating and drinking at Mayer's many times, usually with a large group of people, and the wine and food have always been excellent. Last night was no exception, we stayed until closing time and were among the last to leave, after consuming a mountain of food and 4 bottles of the delicious Fraulein Rose. This morning my husband discovered a handful of tokens in his pocket and we realized we had forgotten to return the glasses, so we decided to walk up to Mayer's, return the tokens and retrieve the money. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a problem because of course, no glasses no money. I don't understand why they give out these tokens since you can't get the money without the glasses. The manager or owner questioned the waiters who were there last night who, naturally and conveniently, didn't remember us or any glasses left on the table, and we were told that somebody else must have returned the glasses and taken the cash, even though this is a little strange since it was pitch dark and we were probably the last to leave. In any case, it's their principle and that's fine, but I was disappointed by the nonchalant attitude, it makes you feel that your custom is not appreciated... I don't think we'll be...
Read moreWent there on a May Saturday afternoon - what a view! Wine was good (Riesling was the best, Gemischter Satz also nice - Spritzer decent option too).
The lounge chairs offer a great view. They have small barrel like tables. The separate queues for foods and drinks help to speed things up. Card payment was easy. We had the Jause which was pre-prepared and very fast. Good sausages and cheeses. The Schnitzelbrötchen was a little dry so make sure you get mustard or something with it.
Unfortunately there was a gaping couple sat next to us and the sour-sweet smell of their continuous caping session over 2 hours ruined the experience a little - if the place had a designated smoking area, this would be much better. We were hardly able to smell the wine or anything natural because of the artificial apple vapes.
It does get busy - when we left at 13.00 there were hardly any free tables left. Easy to access. Prices are ok. If you want less busy, you should go to another place. There also seemed to be a lot...
