Mamaye — Restaurant in Aarschot

New Ethiopian restaurant close by my house. I visited with my partner and son last Saturday. Being a big fan of Ethiopian food we couldn’t resist. They were happy to offer us a table even though we had no reservation.Even though they start dinner from 6(before that you can have drinks and snacks) they were kind to let us take our order at 5:30. They have a very curated wine cart with a lot of wines by the glasses. I had the Shekla Tibs and it was served in an authentic style in a classy clay pot. My partner had the Doro Wat(a favourite of mine too) and it was equally tasty. The front of the house lady and her colleague were very kind and generous. The service was friendly and attentive. This feels very strange because we came with high expectations because of the overwhelmingly positive reviews. The service was very slow at first (half an hour until drinks were asked, we decided to immediately order food because it took so long). Afterwards the food did come quite quickly. The service was not very hospitable and the atmosphere on the terras was not lively. We ordered 2 cocktails (which were OK), chicken wings (which arrived cold on one side) and the sharing plate for two (which was nice). The main dish was finger food but no napkins were given.

All in all we were confused and a bit disappointed by the experience (especially because €100 is not cheap for 2 people). Maybe it was an off day but we wanted to note...

In the most beautiful and trendy part of Leuven there is this magnificent place where different cultures have the perfect marriage. This place has just everything: the chef is an absolute master wizard in her kitchen and the maitre d'hotel is not only a teddy bear but also an expert in wines; which he also complements with a fine selection in Belgian beers. On top of this winning combination you get a true, honest kindness in a marvellous setting. What do you need more. Side note: the vegetarian food is as amazing as the meat lovers food; something I have never seen (I'm not one to easily be satisfied by vegetarian food but I could totally devour a vegetarian basket any time...
