Let me start with the good thing, which was the food. The handmade Msemen rolls were really tasty! A tad too sloppy on the honey, but very tasty! The brewat were good, especially the seafood and the chicken ones (they were my favorites).
Now that's as positive as it got for us. Onto the points where I believe this new and promising restaurant in the heart of Antwerp definitely could/should grow.
First off, what immediately caught my attention (even from way outside) was the IMMENSE smell of orange blossom. Now, I love orange blossom, especially in drinks it is delicious! But this was so overwhelming that it made me uncomfortable.
Second, the table was dirty when we arrived. And not just ours, but several, as well. At least ours didn't have plates on it when we arrived. And it stayed that way until the waitress came.
Which leads me to the following issue: when it's too busy (which it wasn't at that point), just signal the customer that you'll be with them in a minute so they feel seen. We waited for 15' - with said dirty table - until I signalled the waitress, who was not really looking into the room. She took our order with a look on her face that spoke of no interest at all for serving us or even being there. She also had no commercial flair and didn't know what was going on in the room.
By the way, the menu can use some more structure and extra details. For someone with ADHD this is a disaster. I had to look up what brewat was on Google, because an explanation/picture was nowhere to be seen. And drinks ... I mean, your whole place smells of orange blossom ... And then there's only cheap commercial sodas. The only authentic Moroccan drink on the menu was a mint tea. Also, the concept is unclear. Except for "Moroccan food", I had no idea whether we had to order multiple or just one, with or without side. No clue. We went by the price and decided ordering a few was the idea. We could've used a salad as a side dish, but maybe that would've even prolonged the wait.
Speaking of, to finish off, my partner's food came first (the rolls) and I had to wait for 15 more minutes. In the meanwhile I had to ask the waitress myself what was going on ... (it was in the oven). It didn't charm me.
Needless to say I did not enjoy my stay here at all. And as we were finishing our dinner, we noticed the family sitting in the corner had the same problems. So yeah, I truly hope this was just a very bad moment for you in your starting period. I would take measures now: teach staff how to deal with problems and how to serve people decently. It would've changed my feeling a lot. And work a bit on the menu. I'm sure those things would improve the workflow in...
Read moreEverything from the flowing water to the smells to the decor decorating the restaurant Msemen transports diners straight to Morocco! As it name suggests, the specialty here is msemen, a flaky layered Moroccan flatbread griddled fresh and served as a wrap around a selection of ingredients. Unlike a traditional msemen, this restaurant’s version was completely vegan and made without the use of butter or eggs. My pick from the menu was the “full option,” which came with some of almost everything from their selection of fillings, and the combination of ingredients was absolutely delicious! The flavors and textures were perfectly balanced between the pop of the briney green olives; the freshness of the arugula, paprika, and tomatoes; the savoriness of the chicken and chickpeas; the sweetness of the honey; the crunch of the walnuts and sunflower seeds; the smooth creaminess of the ricotta cheese, and the chewy, crispy texture of the flatbread! I also asked for harissa on the side, which added a flavorful spicy kick to every bite. On top of the amazing food and ambiance, the owner here (who comes from Casablanca) was so kind, hospitable, and passionate about the food! What an incredible gem of...
Read moreAmazingly delicious food, I visited the restaurant with my Moroccan friend and they confirmed the food was so authentic (and tasty - I cannot stress this enough), along with the vibes of the place, the decor and the friendliness of the staff. I give only 4 stars because as a major minus, for me personally, the smell of the fried food in the restaurant is so, so strong that it permeates your clothes and if you spend a good amount of time there, your clothes end up with a very poignant smell of fried food afterwards, that is hard to get rid of. Also, their bathroom is outside and unheated (no hot water either) and in the middle of the winter that is kinda torturous. Again, the food and the tea -...
