I can't say how pleased I was when Kihn opened it's doors here in Olds. Previously, I lived in Calgary, and living in such an urban area had given me the opportunity to develop a great appreciation for Asian foods, particularly Vietnamese.
Kihn is easily one of the most popular restaurants in our community, and it's not hard to see why. The quality of the food is easily as good as any Vietnamese I've ever had, and the service is excellent. There isn't very much on the menu that would push the boundaries of the Vietnamese cuisine initiate, this is a traditional and conservative community after all, so those who are hoping for weird and unusual foods won't find it here.
This is the sort of place where regulars are greeted by name, the owner and his family take time to get to know their customers and are very welcoming. The building is a former hole-in-the-wall tavern that has been renovated to appear modern contemporary, and has enough seating for a good sized lunch crowd. Of all the restaurants in Olds, this is solidly my favorite.
Kihn is located in the old downtown, which is being revitalized, and now...

The son working the front isn't very welcoming.
I ordered salad rolls... which seemed fresh...a lil steep $ for 3 though.
I also ordered a vietnamese ice coffee but asked to add the tapioca pearls... that was a bit of a problem for him to sort out in his mind apparently because he said he couldn't " that's not how it comes"-I told him I'd pay extra...it was the most watery I've had ever... and the pearls hasn't been soaked/ cooked long enough.
The owners seem really nice... the lady brought my food out.
When I asked for some sauté chili oil, she gave me one but then the son wanted to charge me extra. I've never been charged extra at any other vietnamese restaurant.
I was going to return tonight for a new year's eve treat with the kids... but now I'm...
Read moreNormally I order rare beef satay whenever I go to a Vietnamese restaurant. However I asked them to give me to saute on the side so that I can make it the exact heat that I want. Otherwise you're stuck with it either being really hot or not hot enough. For the first time in the history of Vietnamese restaurants they told me they charge extra for that. Even though rare beef and rare beef Satay is the same price. Excuse was they make it in the house ... doesn't every other restaurant? Ever since this restaurant changed owners the food hasn't tasted as good, the price has gone up, and then they like to nickel-and-dime you for just a pinch of hot sauce? Not eating here again, I would rather drive an hour to Calgary to get it than patronize a restaurant that charges extra for something NO OTHER...
