We have frequented this business for many years. Since long before the current owner took over. On our last visit, 8 of the 10 beer taps were not working. I had to settle for a bottle for which I was charged a pint price. The special that I went for is also no longer on the menu. The owner tried to tell us that was only Thursday nights but, since we are only in Sk on long weekends, that is obviously a recent thing. The special that night was 2 for 1 8 oz NY steak. OK not happy but we drove 35 minutes to get there so make the best. My wife and I both ordered steaks medium with stuffed potatoes and veg. My came with a stuffed potatoes and so well done that it had zero spring back. I cut to confirm and then asked my server how I had ordered to make sure there was no miscommunication. She confirmed medium. Meanwhile my wife's order had also arrived. Keep in mind that she ordered the same as me but with dry toast. She got a steak overdone, baked potatoes instead of stuffed and toast dripping with butter. Sent back of course as was my steak. My second steak arrives and testing with a fork, I could tell that it was half medium and half well done. Well let's say that this was our last visit and that was decided before we finished our meal. Then the bill arrived. Instead of one charge of 21.99 for 2 meals as advertised, our bill itemized each meal as well as $3 per stuffed potatoes. I Should neutron the stuffed potatoes is hardly a description that I would use. I am not chef Ramsey but a stuffed potatoes entails scooping out the potatoes from the skin and adding some ingredients like butter, sour cream, chives etc, and then putting it back into the skin. This fake had less than half of the potatoes scooped out. It appears to be smashed with a fork and plopped back in the skin and sprinkled with shredded tex mex cheese. The bill for this complete failure of a meal with 1 bottle of beer and one 6 oz house wine $84. No apologies, no discounts for the lousy kitchen performance and certainly no 2 for 1. Do not go there with expectations. You are bound to be disappointed. The new owners appear to be looking for ways to cut costs and corners. That was most definitely...
Read moreWe only ate at the restaurant. The service was an interesting experience; for some reason we had three servers. The first was a young woman of East Indian heritage who, I felt, did not want to be there. I had to call her back when she left midway through the order, because the other people at the table also wanted to place their orders.
Another server took our food order. This young woman was blond and much more friendly. She got the orders efficiently and whisked away.
A diminutive, slightly older woman was our third server. She and the blond server brought us the food. She realized I hadn't gotten my soup earlier than the entree, and I heard her instructing the other servers that it's supposed to come out before the meal. Perhaps the reason we had three servers is that they're training staff members.
The meal itself was terrific! I had the steak. The 8oz New York strip was done to medium perfectly, and without adding anything to it, had a very pleasant flavour. I was glad I got the rice with it.
The Pinor Noir I got with it tasted like it may have been Copper Moon. I would have enjoyed it more if the glass hadn't been coated in dried droplets that stood out from the glass; I scraped one away with my fingernail, it seemed to be from having been washed. Undesirable.
Altogether the pace was timely, the service was mostly pleasant, the cost of food here was lower than I expected, and the quality of my meal was...
Read moreI stayed overnight at the motel attached to 121 Steakhouse, so dinner here was part of the plan — and it turned out to be a great choice. The turkey and rice soup was pure comfort food, like something homemade on a winter night. For appetizers, the steak nachos were a favorite at the table, and the spinich and cheese dip was good too The steak was cooked perfectly medium, and the shrimp side was a little under-seasoned but still enjoyable. The chicken with melted cheese was slightly dry but still tasty. Desserts were the highlight: the warm apple pie and the lemon meringue with ice cream were both excellent. Service was outstanding — attentive, welcoming, and they even let us stay past closing. The continental breakfast included in the night stay was more than enough to get the day started. I asked for omlette eggs, it comes with potatoes, bacon, bread and of course coffee. Another pleasant surprise was the on-site liquor store. It had a selection of local finds I hadn’t seen elsewhere, including Saskatoon Berry liqueur that felt like a regional gem, almost reminiscent of ice wine. Overall, while the motel itself is simple and needs a lot of TLC, the steakhouse and liquor store make the stop more than worthwhile. A strong choice for a meal if you’re passing...
