A bit of a mixed feeling about the place. Overall, it was a great experience to visit a sort of classic North American diner. Polite and friendly workers, cool authentic atmosphere, quite normal prices for a very varied menu of food and drinks. There is even a special feature in the form of working old game machines. My wife and I ordered Meat Loaf with vegetables and fries and a Big Booper Burger to eat. Mill Cove beer and Vanilla Milkshake to drink. And a cup of regular coffee (something like nostalgia for old 90s movies from childhood. I suppose it will be understood only to those who grew up watching these movies in childhood living in another countries like was me)... So... I really liked the burger, the taste of the beer and the milkshake. I didn’t really like the Loaf, but I have my own complicated relationship with such rolls(I don't like very softy-viscous tastes in meat), It was good for my wife, so it wasn't a problem of the Loaf's taste itself. The cocktail was served in a small glass and the rest of the cocktail was given in a high metal cup. Controversial decision, I think it would have been better to just use the larger glasses... Coffee... Coffee does not get along with reheating. You can google why, and in such places coffee containers are constantly used for refilling and are constantly heated. So the taste was of course rougher than I would like to taste. But firstly, cream helps to make the taste better, and secondly, it is a good doping for drivers at night or in the morning, and this was important for truckers in the past for example, so we can say that I closed the gestalt of my childhood and partially enjoyed this coffee :) ....Otherwise, my wife and I liked this place. As a final word I would say: definitely try to visit it at least once, it is a win-win option. And whether to become a regular customer or not - is up...
Read moreWe thought we would try a new place for brunch, so we went to True North Diner in Bedford Place Mall. It's funny how I have lived in this area now for 6 years and have not heard of, or even noticed this place. I found it through Google reviews and I am glad I looked.
The first thing you notice when walking in is the ambiance and decor. It's like taking a trip back in time to the 50's/60's. They even have a huge bubble gum machine and an old school photo booth which you rarely see these days. They also have a projector set up that that they use to show old commercials on a large white screen that is high up where every one can watch. Please note it is not currently operational but they are looking into getting it repaired.
Our waitress (I didn't catch her name) and the service was great, and the food was fresh and served hot. I was feeling like brunch so I ordered a clubhouse and fries. My wife ordered the all day breakfast and my daughter ordered chicken fingers and fries. We ordered deep fried dill pickles and onion rings as appetizers just to try and see how they were.
Both appetizers were delicious and probably one of if not the best deep fried dill pickles and onion rings that I have had to date. The clubhouse was made with real turkey and not the processed sliced turkey which was great. I didn't ask but I believe their fries are home cut/fresh cut fries as they had the skin on them. My daughter (conosour of chicken fingers) said they were tender. My wife enjoyed her big breakfast as well. They also serve Mother Parker's coffee which I enjoy as I drink my coffee black and it is not bitter.
Overall our first visit was great and we will be back to try some other items in the menu. Thank you for the wonderful food and...
Read moreWe went here for the Mother's Day buffet but ended up going for the a-la-carte menu. The menu itself was small but in these post-pandemic days, that's all you can expect. Since it was Mother's Day the place was packed so it took a while to get a table which was fine to be honest. We finally sat down at about 2 minutes to 1PM. Our drinks came in at about 15 minutes later also partly due to the fact that we took a while to place the order. The food though came in 30 minutes after that, meaning that it took 45 minutes to get the food after we sat down. In my mind that is quite unacceptable. To top that off, the person who was waiting on us was not friendly to say the least, not that they were rude but not smile at all. They "conveniently" did not serve us our food. The food ended up being served by someone else. Not a word of apology for the wait etc. The food itself was not really great. not bad, but I would say not worth the wait. The portions were slightly small but the prices were pretty decent considering the inflation these days. The place itself was clean and had a positive energy about it. Honestly, the one person in touch with the customers should be taught more customer service skills. I would say that made a huge difference and also the fact that the food took about 45 minutes to arrive soured the experience a bit. I certainly won't have this place on my list the next time I...
