Hello to the conscientious diners that care to know more about what goes on behind the scenes in terms of how employees and new hires get treated in the restaurant they dine-in.
Even though Google Reviews are usually for rating food and customer experience, the belittling and humiliating treatment I got as a new kitchen hire, by the father & son managers, shouldn't go unreported.
I was eager to start working with Turkuaz because I was a huge fan of their menu. I took the time to study every menu item in both of their locations before I went in for my first day. I was scheduled for training at 9 am in the Bedford location so I made sure to arrive 15 mins early to make a good first impression but because the doors were still locked I had to wait outside in the rain for the chef to arrive well past 9 O'clock.
Once we entered the kitchen, I wasn't offered an apron or a hairnet but I had come prepared with my own to make sure that I had everything I needed to start right away. I was told early on not to dispose of the "disposable" gloves and to keep washing the same one with soap instead. I went along with that until he asks me to get started on the falafel, that's when I insisted in changing the pair I had on since they were fully immersed in raw meat and even after washing they were still tainted red. He snaps at me and says I can't use the gloves anymore and to start using my bare hands since I'm so "wasteful".
When I got started on the falafel shaping, that's when he loses his cool because my first batch was not coming out perfect and out of no where and without warning tells me to leave and that I'm done for the day. I'm left shook and unsure how to react. He expects me to leave without question and orders me to clean the floor for him before I walk out. That was his way to make me feel more disposable than the gloves that he kept reusing.
When I reluctantly go back to ask the chef for an explanation, the son comes in swiftly and tells me "you can go now, you can leave." I have worked and done training in over 5 different kitchens before and never have experienced anything that came close to the degrading treatment that I got from this father and son duo.
I know that, for customers, family owned restaurants sound very wholesome, but for employees It's often a guarantee that no one will stand up for you and that you're outshouted and outnumbered when...
Read moreEDIT IN RESPONSE TO OWNER: There is NO EXCUSE for taking a chair away from a pregnant woman. No matter how many times you keep saying it, a full restaurant is NEVER going to be an excuse for taking a chair away from a pregnant woman. You could have taken a chair from anyone else. What YOU did was very disrespectful to your guests and is completely unacceptable. Nothing you can say will ever make it right. If you can't understand that, then clearly you don't have any decency and know nothing about hospitality. If you are going to disrespect my wife and not apologize after being given multiple chances to correct your actions, then yelling is the least that anyone can do.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: I came here to share my experience and realized that other people also had similar concerns. It seems like the owner is a habitual liar and will very likely respond to this review with another lie.
We were regular customers and we loved their food, but good food is not everything. The owner of this place is extremely rude and has ZERO RESPECT for his customers.
We made a reservation for 12 people, but we ended up being 13 people, so we asked for an extra chair. The waitress got us a chair from another table, then a few minutes later she came back and asked for the chair back as apparently someone else was sitting on it. She took the chair from my wife, who is 9 MONTHS PREGNANT and just left her standing there in shock. I went to the waitress and asked her if she realizes that she just took a chair from a pregnant woman, but she just shrugged and went on with her business as usual. So I decided to leave my barely touched food and leave the restaurant.
As I was leaving, I made another waiter aware that I was leaving because of what happened and as I was about to tell him that I will not be paying for the food, he was already on his way to print me my bill! No apology, no regret, no respect at all.
On my way out, I confronted the owner, who did not get himself involved at all, and when I told him that you cannot take a chair from a pregnant woman and make her stand up in your own restaurant, his response was exactly this: "It was not her chair," without even a hint of an apology in his tone.
Needless to say, you have lost 13 regular customers who will never set foot in your restaurant again, and that is not including our families and other friends who used to go there a...
Read moreI really do not recommend this restaurant..we were a bunch of friends having dinner there ..after my food was just served ..some of our friends had to go..that does not mean that we all should go..the waiter came and told me that there is 45 people had reservation and we have to move to another table so they can use our spot! We accept and then we moved to a smaller table ( I just got my food and almost ate 2 spoon of it)
Few minutes the owner (with angry face)has asked us to leave as our time is up!!!! !!!!!!!!!! And we can’t stay as other customers may come !!! Under what state is that ..racism..greediness..first time to experience this in my life !
Such a rude person , I asked him imagine yourself in a restaurant and in the middle of your dinner the owner asked you to leave..he pretend to ignore my word and has repeated that we have to leave as customers will come to have their dinner and we can’t stay longer!!!!!!!!!!
Beside I orders Pepsi that never showed up and when Its time to pay I found them add it to my receipt with a mistake of extra rice!!!!!!!!!!!
My friend had ordered a meal to go too..how come we have to leave the place and the order is not ready!!!! Poor service indeed
My friend was about to call the police for them for such bad treatment.
I asked for boxes to go( did not finish my plate) Stopped the order to go...and left with such a very unpleasant experience.
I will never go back again.
Reply to the owner: First , if you are busy you could apologize before taking my order and explain it ..not to ask after my order by few minutes to leave...
Second, we were 4 adults and 3 kids and a baby..so basically a table with 4 chairs wouldn’t fit us so we have to sit in another table by logic so kids can finish their food.
Third, you should treat 1 person like 45 person equally..I remember I asked the server to place the bread and pickles for my order as it should be..she just brought my plate and not even my drink.
If you are in a rush and that’s your way you should have told us before placing my order.
Sorry to say that’s...
