Well, House of Kabob. Let’s call it "Le Café de Regret et Mystery Meat". It’s the kind of place where you walk in with hope and leave with a story though not necessarily the kind you’d tell at a dinner party. The menu is a curious mix of “almost good” and “please, no.” The chicken kabobs? Divine. Tender, flavorful, and cooked with what I can only assume was actual care. The fish, however, tasted like it had been on a journey a long, sad journey that began sometime last century. I half expected it to rise from the plate and demand a proper burial. The staff? Well, there’s an older Filipino lady who seems to be holding the entire operation together with sheer willpower and a tired smile. She’s the kind of woman who makes you want to write a letter to Parliament demanding better working conditions for restaurant workers everywhere. You want to tip her your entire wallet and whisper, “You deserve better.” But alas, all I had was a twenty and a guilty conscience.
Now, let’s talk about the parking lot. It’s not so much a parking lot as it is a social experiment in patience and chaos theory. There’s garbage swirling around like it’s trying to unionize. Finding a spot feels like an Olympic sport, except instead of a medal, you just get a mild panic attack.
And then there’s the kitchen. Visible from the parking lot, because subtlety is clearly not their strong suit. It’s the kind of kitchen that makes you wonder if the health inspector was last seen fleeing in terror. I won’t describe it in detail! let’s just say it’s not for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach.
But here’s the thing: we survived. We ate, we laughed , and we lived to tell the tale. Would I go back? Maybe. If only to check on that poor Filipino lady and see if the chicken kabobs are still holding the fort. In the meantime, I’ll be stocking up on antacids and praying for the fish....
Read moreHouse of Kebab is one of the few Persian cuisine options in Calgary, and possibly one of the oldest. As someone who has visited many times, I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, they serve some exceptional dishes like Dizi and Kaleh Pacheh .These specialties are consistently delicious and showcase the authentic flavors of Persian cuisine. However, my experiences with the rest of their menu have been inconsistent. At times, the food is prepared with great skill and professionalism, but on other occasions, it falls flat and feels like a disappointing meal. This lack of consistency can be quite frustrating. The interior design and cleanliness of House of Kebab leave much to be desired. The place feels neglected and has an almost abandoned vibe, which detracts from the dining experience. The ambiance is far from inviting, and it often feels like you are in the middle of nowhere. This aspect of the restaurant is particularly off-putting, and I believe that investing in better design and cleanliness could significantly enhance their appeal and potentially increase their customer base.It seems that the lack of competition in Persian cuisine in Calgary has led to a complacent attitude from the owners. They don't seem motivated to make improvements, perhaps because they don't feel the pressure to do so. If a new Persian restaurant with good quality food and a better atmosphere were to open, I would definitely...
