My doctor says I'm comically obese, not clinically obese... comically obese. And so you know my review comes from a place of expertise. If you're wondering if there's a new king of the Calgary "Pizza by the Slice" war, with comparisons made to the now iconic Seniore's Pizza, the answer is: There's definitely a contender here and you'll need to make that decision yourself.
First off, I'm looking at this from a "pizza by the slice" angle exclusively because I feel there are much better pizzas out there around Calgary but few offer an affordable, late-night, monster-sized slice option.
There's a lot to love about Savona's Pizza, but there's also a bit to be disappointed by. Let's start with the good.
The pizza itself is a less greasy and less heavy version of Seniore's Pizza. The crust is less salty and a bit more plain than Seniore's (which has a pretzel like quality) but is more crispy, flaky, and less chewy (I'm personally not the biggest fan of chewy crusts). Great, overall. I had one slice of the Donaire pizza and it's comparable in flavour to what you find at Seniore's. The toppings felt a bit light, but the cheese seemed to be of higher quality than what you find at Seniore's. More mozzarella & less cheddar, which I liked. It felt like this slice was a bit smaller than what you get at Seniore's, but not much. Ultimately it felt a little less filling than what you get at Seniore's and that could have been due to the thinner but more structurally sound crust.
With the cheese and crust being less oily the pizza overall was less oily, something that I appreciated. You didn't lose any flavour as a result.
It's still felt like a decent value at $4 despite being a little less filling than Seniore's.
As far as service goes, I went out with friends on a late Sunday night and there was no lineup. They had a decent amount of pies ready and while the guy wasn't too excited about answering whether a Donaire was ready, there was in fact a fresh one and I was in and out quickly. If you're at Seniore's, the massive lineup isn't bad when you're with friends but obviously the worst when you're there by yourself looking for something quick.
My friend complained about the flies there, and while I don't recall seeing any myself I can imagine them as the place isn't the cleanest. Odd for a new place.
So the atmosphere score takes a hit due to the cleanliness of the place, along with the fact that it's pretty tiny and probably can't deal with lines during the cold. Seniore's newly renovated location is much more pleasant but still also not ideal for winter lineups (an easily fixable problem using the ample space inside but they haven't pursued this).
What would it take to make it the king of late-night pizza-by-the-monster-slice? I think bumping up the toppings by 20% would make it a superior value to Seniore's (which, again, is $0.25 cheaper for a more filling pizza). While I think a $3.75 price would also make this a better choice, I realize that they likely get a lot of daytime high school traffic to warrant the higher price (supply/demand). But the toppings thing can be bumped up for the late night crowd, drawing people from Seniore's to this place instead from 8pm to Midnight.
This place also closes as Midnight most days (1am on Friday and Saturday). Contrast that to 4am at Seniore's on those same days, and 2am the rest of the days. This sort of affects how "late-night" we can call this place. I'm sure that once this place gets more attention, that might change.
With more attention, here's hoping to a good ol' fashioned Pizza War between the two. Haven't had one since the YYC...

While they don’t have a dining area, their takeout service is efficient and well-organized. The staff is always friendly and professional, making the pickup process quick and hassle-free. I especially want to highlight Altayeb, who stands out for his amazing customer service skills. He’s always polite, welcoming, and goes out of his way to ensure everything is perfect. The way he interacts with customers is truly impressive—he’s kind, attentive, and makes you feel valued. It’s clear he takes pride in his work, and it really elevates the overall experience.
