I live close by to a fish and chip store that I have been to many many times but wanted to try a new place. Otto was it. Getting on the 401 was the quickest way and worth the drive. I found out about it through the internet. Not sure how long it has been here or if it is a franchise? The fish here is on par with the price you pay anywhere else. The fish is not really big like a some places but the key here is that it is solid fish! There is no excess batter on the ends like in many places. It was great. Because of the meds I am on which are designed to trim my appetite, this is the first time I have ate both pieces in over a year. So it is that good. Solid fish. I got the home fries which were nice. I wish they were a bit browner but they tasted fine. They have the good Tartar Sauce in the square packs and not the ones in the plastic wrap that tastes like glue. I had the Cod. Next time I will try the Haddock. Friendly service and very quick. Never had to wait long just 7 minutes like they said. And they're not cheap with the tartar sauce like other places. I asked for 4 and got four which is what you need for 2 pieces of fish. Great business and I will be...
Read moreWent there last week and ordered one of their 1-3pm specials. The fish was a pretty nice size, however within the 6 minute drive back to my place the steam built up in the box and allowed the batter to come away from the fish which made it messy and harder to eat.
On top of that, I hated the fries that came with the fish. I was expecting fresh hand-cut fries, and instead what I got were french fries similar in appearance and taste to those in the Costco food court - which I am not a fan of. For the $18 I paid, I was left really disappointed with half the dish and just really didn’t like the fries at all. Ended up throwing the fries in the bin.
The fries here seemed like an afterthought. For the money I paid, I was expecting some really good fish and chips, especially with all the positive reviews, but what I got instead was okay fish and bad fries. I’m giving 2 stars for the large size of the fish, but considering the batter coming off and the horrible fries I can’t give more than that.
Hope they fix the fry issue and decide to go with fresh hand-cut fries in the future. Might come back if they do, otherwise it’s just...
Read moreI stopped in for lunch while traveling for work and I was pleasantly surprised. The service was immediate, friendly and courteous and the establishment was clean and bright. What really knocked my socks off was the fish & chips; I have not tasted fish and chips like this in over 40 years! the batter was light, crispy, and golden--absolutely perfect, and the fish was absolutely perfectly cooked with a proper sweet taste and finish that can only mean very fresh. The potatoes were perfect as well, truly crispy on the outside, the perfect consistency inside and seasoned to perfection. The tartar sauce was obviously made in house and is the perfect accompaniment to the fish. The owners obviously know their stuff when it comes to their chosen cooking of seafood; it's not just a job, it's a passion, and they do it well. I used to cook professionally for years so I know what I'm looking for, and in a world of chains with ready-made solutions, this is a very special treat. If I lived here, I'd be here 2x a week at least; I'm coming back the next time I'm in town for sure. I challenge you to find better fish & chips...
