We had decided to check out Chuck's Roadhouse for the first time. I usually like to let new restaurants settle for a bit before going because I know it can take a while to work out the kinks. It was myself, my partner and my 6-year-old. We were seated quickly and my son was given a kids menu and crayons. The waitress came over and got our drinks order. My son ordered a chocolate milk. They only had a little chocolate milk left so they improvised by adding some regular milk which I was fine with. My son ordered the marinara pasta, I had the ribs and wings and my partner had the steak sizzler. Food took a while to come out but we were still enjoying our time as a family. I was disappointed when my appetizer of pickle spears never came out but we moved past that. The food was decent, I mean for the price I wasn't expecting Keg level but I was extremely disappointed with the mashed potatoes. They definitely tasted like boxed mashed potatoes and there was $1.99 extra charge. The waitress did a quick pop by and asked how things were but didn't stop for and answer, just kept going. I had to go to the bar to get a refill on my diet coke and a glass of water for my son as well as extra napkins because our waitress didn't come back except to clear the table. While sitting and observing the way things were running the staff did not appear to be too worried about the customer experience. The table next to us had a beverage spill which after watching them struggle with two napkins to clean I jumped in to help then walked up to two employees standing having a conversation to ask for a cloth for the table next to us. I'm not expecting much but I do expect good service when I dine in at a restaurant. A little attention, a smile and some consideration. When the waitress finally returned to clear our plates she asked if I was done and pointed to the potatoes. I took the opportunity to state that they were actually disappointing and tasted like boxed potatoes. She made an inaudible sound, shrugged her shoulders (didn't deny it) and then removed the plates. When our bill came we double checked to make sure the pickle spears were not on it and paid and left.
Now that being said, the food wasn't terrible, in fact I did enjoy the ribs and my son enjoyed his pasta and my partner enjoyed his sizzler. I would definitely stay away from the mashed potatoes (any restaurant that serves boxed potatoes makes me question the rest of the food tbh) and I think their service needs improvements. I probably wouldn't have even wrote about the potatoes and the missed order of pickles if I felt the service was good. At a restaurant the patron should never have to get up to the bar to get their own drinks. This is not a self serve place.
My partner insists that we try again, it may be an off night. And I agree. As someone who works in customer service, I understand that sometimes we are not on our game so we will attempt again and hope for better service in the future. But please if HO is listening, please please stop serving those mashed potatoes immediately!!!
I will update with our next experience when we go!
Update April 2025 My son and I decided to have a mom and son date and returned to Chucks for a redo and I'm glad we did. The waitress we had was amazing. She was good with my son, served us good food in a timely manner with a smile. She was attentive and even though they were busy and there was a lot of new staff, she apologized and I explained she had nothing to apologize for. We had a great evening and we will be returning in the future. I still hold true to the fact that it's boxed mashed potatoes which is disappointing but I just won't order those in the future and focus on the other great items...
Read moreWe have dined here often and normally we enjoy ourselves although this Saturday was by far not the normal experience. My wife, 2 year old daughter and myself arrived and were sat quickly. Our server arrived at our table and she was great. She had actually served us a few times before and she is always great with our daughter who loves to interact with everyone. We ordered an appetizer with our drinks and everything seemed good so far. We enjoyed our Appy and then ordered our mains. When the food came, our daughters dish did not look appetizing at all. I decided to try it first. The noodles were very hard and it just tasted absolutely terrible. I wasn't going to feed this to our daughter. It took a while to flag the waitress down and we informed our server that we couldn't feed that to our daughter and it did not taste good at all. I ordered her some ribs and fries instead and asked if they could be prepared quickly so our daughter could enjoy her dinner with us. The server said no problem and then asked if we wanted a to go box for the other dish. I was confused and explained that the food did not taste good at all and it needed to be thrown out. She then said ok I can ask my manager if I can take it off the bill. This confused me even more as this shouldn't even be a question. If the food is not right and does not taste good and is sent back then there should be no question at all whether the customer pays for it or not. The ribs came out in about ten minutes which was great although, they were cooked to oblivion and only about half the ribs were edible. On a side note; my t-bone steak was paper thin and not very good at all. The taste was there but the cut was absolutely terrible with weird texture and lots of gristle. My wife's loaded fries were also uneventful. There was a dessert on the menu that we wanted to try but after such a bad experience with the food we already decided that we better not even order it. To top all this off, our waitress comes and tells us that we will have to pay for the dish sent back because the manager said she is not taking it off the bill but we could get a free ice cream....as explained, we didn't want anymore food. We just wanted to get out of there. I felt bad for the waitress because she was obviously very embarrassed. I paid the $95 bill and did not tip one cent. I apologized to the waitress and asked her to please explain to her crumby manager just why she missed out on what would normally be at least a 20% tip over a $10 dollar un-edible dish that I wouldn't feed to my dog.
We still wanted ice cream so we left and stopped at the local Dairy Queen. Furthermore, Sunday came and we were still upset that our weekly night out for dinner was so unremarkably bad that we decided to drive all the way from Grand Valley to Guelph to go to East Side Mario's which is ALWAYS fantastic. To top it all off, the bill at East sides was only $78 dollars before tip ($98 after tip) and we had table bread, an appetizer, salads, a sangria, and three beautiful pasta dishes that tasted delicious.
