I was fiddling around on a road trip with a buddy, Mike. He's often pretty particular about his food and we had driven in from Montrealand I remembered seeing a bunch of quaint looking places in vankleek Hill on the way to driving over to the brewery up from Hawkesbury Ontario and we hit a corner street figuratively speaking of course :-) LOL that had a woman putting out a sign saying book saleand my buddy Mike is a big big book reader. So we followed the sign and the lady and parked in the back of the church went in bought a few CDs for me and he didn't buy any books much to my surprise! But I was happy and then across the street or just down a bit was this joint named Niko'sand among three different recommendations by the church ladies and one of the church ladies sons who just walked in and finished eating there, we were told that was a pretty good place and so we pick that.. inside it's far less pretentious then they're lovely signage outside.... But what it did have is really decent food, especially breakfast menu, served quickly efficiently and with great charm from the waitress and we found out that was the owner and his wife further down at a few. we ended up speaking to them about running a restaurant of this type and all the work involved when it's a family business. My buddy Mike grew up in a family business that also have to do with books, surprise surprise LOL. I really found the food to be decent and tasty and have that homemade feel to it. Did I remember saying they got farm fresh eggs or something like that?!? whatever it was it was perfect for the moment and if I'm in vankleek Hill again and need to have a decent bite, then my food enjoyment radar will drive me right there. I've been exploring the restaurants of Hawkesbury Ontario and now I'm starting vankleek Hill explorations. this is a good standard fare restaurant with simple chairs and tables and a hard-working staff with good food. as a matter of fact remembering it my mouth is watering cuz it's Saturday morning at 11 and I haven't even had my coffee yet so I'm going to whip up some good food thinking...
Read moreSays "family restaurant" on the sign but we felt so unwelcomed as soon as we walked in the door.
Our family came here yesterday at 12:45 and unfortunately had a very unpleasant experience with our waitress.
The restaurant was beautiful, atmosphere was nice and the food was great, but sadly since the moment we walked in we were not treated with very much respect. 5 adults and 4 children (7,3,1,4months) and the waitress immediately excluded the kids from the head count and pointed to a back table of 6 and told us to go sit over there, (I asked for a high chair on the way to the table), we had to pull up an extra table to ours (it wasn't being used and we were in the back corner and need the extra space) and then she came back and told me I can go get the high chair myself at the other end of the restaurant. My father in law was about to get it when the other hostess kindly brought it over to us.
The kids were not exceptionally loud or disruptive, they were quieter than some of the other guests who were yelling across the restaurant to another group of guests.
My 3 year old came to the other side of the table and knocked a sign over (his dad caught it other than a small plastic piece) and told him to pick up the piece, thats when the waitress came and snatched the (big wooden) sign away and almost hit my three year old in the head with it.
I asked for my $23 quesadilla to be made a certain way (with just chicken and cheese) and no onions and she rudely said that they can't change the way things are made and it comes with salsa on it, and I asked again to have it the way I like and she said she will try. Didn't come back to tell me if they could or not just brought the food out later without saying anything.
We watched her be friendly and converse with the other guests and it was very discouraging to experience. If another restaurant in town had of been open, we would have left and...
Read moreMy son and I went here on es a few years ago for a breakfast date around Christmas. I had noticed that they had an angel tree with many many kids still on it. Because I was a child that was in foster care I have always felt an obligation to do angel tree every single year! Sometimes we will do it for several children because we have a tendency to over buy for the kids so they’re able to share the gifts across a few!!:) my son got up and investigated the ages on the kids left and it made him sad because they were mostly older kids. He wanted to do a boy and a girl so I told him okay I’ll go up and get the two oldest kids and we will get them the best stuff!!:) after I did this I was rudely verbally approached from across the restaurant by the older female owner. She said with a sign largely printed behind the tree stating the gifts had to be back by X date- “those aren’t to take for decoration, EH.” I replied I knew what they were but thank you 🙏 she then decided to get into a verbal altercation with me about how I shouldn’t take two because then that will be two children not getting presents for Christmas. I told her that I didn’t need her to get upset with us over trying to make a kids day better? After she made me cry and shout at her we took our food and left. Not even a week later we returned with an oversized over filled bag of toys to be given nothing but a hurtful stare and a judgmental huff. If you don’t live here these places are okay but everyone is talking about you as you eat, everyone is judging you. This town had lots of derives to help families if you’re willing to be misspoken about on porches or over Facebook threads. And unfortunately the businesses are not a single bit different. It’s just must more hurtful when it’s live in front of your face and not...
