I came here 2 different times in the past week or so -once was for a big family dinner, the second time my partner and I came for a more intimate date night. Both times I was blown away by the delicious food, superb service, and soothing atmosphere. I'm disappointed in myself as a Comox Valley local for never dining here before, because I most definitely missed out on many delicious meals!
My table(s) had the same server (Alec) both times. Alec was attentive, personable, and knowledgable of the menu. All the other staff we connected with were just as wonderful! I'm especially impressed at the attentivenes of the Chef himself; who checked in on our large table of 10 personally to ensure we were enjoying our meals, while still providing delicious, high-quality dishes in a timely manner.
During my second visit I ordered the coconut curry sockeye salmon and the Aperol spritz cocktail. I can honestly say the Aperol spritz was the best I've had in Canada - not too strong, not too sweet, just the right level of citrus. Absolute perfection! I haven't had a good Aperol spritz like this one since my time in Europe.
My meal was just as delicious - the salmon was cooked and seasoned to perfection on a delicious bed of risotto, paired with seasonal veg & a coconut curry sauce that will knock your socks off. The portion size left you satisfied, but with room for dessert - and I have to say, you NEED to have dessert!
During the family get together, I was lucky enough to try a bite out of just about everything. My chocolate mousse was rich, creamy, smooth, and satisfied my never-ending craving for chocolate. The strawberry mousse I stole from my brother was light, fresh, and just as devine. The sticky toffee pudding was sweet, rich, and absolute perfection. And the apple strudel? Don't get me started. Seriously - I'd come to Avenue for the desserts alone!
The atmosphere of the restaurant was everything I could ask for. Pleasant music at the perfect volume with an acoustic design throughout that provided optimal sound quality. The decore was tasteful with a light German touch, and the entire place was very clean and well taken care of - it's very clear that the owners take great pride in their establishment.
In short, if you want a delicious meal in a beautiful establishment - be it for a romantic dinner or a casual family get together - Avenue Bistro is the...
Read moreI began with whiskey sour and my wife had their signature bourbon Cocktail, both were fantastic... the whiskey sour was clean and authentic, with no unnecessary berries or sugar rim... classic taste and fresh egg white. The bourbon cocktail was imaginative and well balanced.
Our starter was the Bison Carpaccio, served with radicchio and fried capers, seared oyster mushrooms, whole grain mustard and a garlic aoili and crustini. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Delicate and delicious. Highly recommend trying this if you are into Carpaccio.
For the mains I went with the Forrester style chnitzel with spaetzle and my wife had the goulash with dumplings so we could share with each other and sample more options of the authentic German cuisine that they serve here. The pork schnitzel and the beef Goulash were both cooked to perfection.. the beef goulash was tender and flavourful in the wonderful gravy style sauce with the dumplings. The pork was breaded well cooked crispy and very moist throughout.. the mishroom gravy was the perfect consistency. The spaetzle was great at the start of my meal, but as I did not mix it into the mushroom gravy it began to get dry, so I recommend mixing that good gravy with the spaetzle as you start your meal to keep it moist.
Both dishes were served with the red cabbage which had a very tangy taste similar to a good beet borscht.
Excellent food for a fair price. Service was friendly and prompt.
My only complaint would be that the restaurant name, ambiance and look itself does not speak to the German style it provides in the kitchen.. not what I would expect on a bistro menu, but an excellent meal and a great opportunity to try some real authentic ...
Read moreRecently my brother-in-law and I stayed in Comox as our base for a weekend ski trip at Mt Washington. After a day of skiing, we decided to wander down to Avenue Bistro for dinner as it was close to our hotel. We didn’t have a reservation, but the host was very gracious to get us a table. We initially thought the restaurant would have your typical north American fare, such as burgers, pizza, etc. When we reviewed the menu, we noticed that they had a great selection of German cuisine. There were a couple of different schnitzel options, and a beef roulade was also available. We decided to try their oyster mushroom “calamari” as a starter to share. Absolutely delicious! We each tried the two schnitzel options, and again, delightful! Both came with some amazing red cabbage and spaetzle. The portion was incredibly generous. My mother is German, so I grew up with German food. Avenue Bistro was a welcome surprise as we didn’t realize it was run by a German family offering authentic German food! I live in Victoria where we only have one Austrian restaurant which has only been operational for a few years, so Avenue Bistro was a great surprise. We also enjoyed some authentic imported German beer on tap. In addition, all the staff were fantastic. They were all incredibly friendly and attentive. Just to add, I had left my reading glasses in the restaurant, and they graciously mailed them back to me. I will visit the next time I am in Comox and recommend Avenue Bistro to anyone who is planning a trip...
