See my UPDATE below(Coco-no go)
Please note: this restaurant is next door to the Subway on the side of the plaza facing 127th street.
After reading reviews of their location on the south side, I couldn't wait to try this place. The first time I went I had the two piece regular chicken with rice and a they gave me a side of the sauce. The chicken was incredibly not greasy to the point I was wondering if it was baked, not deep fried. Instead of using the sauce for my chicken I put it on the steamed white rice. I'm not a fan of hot spicy food, but have to say this was very good. It has a mild heat to it with plenty of sweet and sour flavour.
I went back a second time and tried the lunch special (two pieces, rice, and Caesar salad-and again the side so sauce). The Caesar salad was great as was the rice and sauce, but this time the chicken seemed a bit more greasy and the second piece (after the drumstick) was unidentifiable. I'm not sure what part of the chicken it came from. I'm not a fan of dark meat, but it seems that's all they serve. Maybe they save the white meat for the chicken strips--which is what I plan on trying the next time. If you go, hopefully the owner? Manager? Counter clerk is working. She is so incredibly friendly and when you order she asks for your first name and then refers to it from then on. Telling you by name that your order is ready. Asking you by name if everything is okay. Saying goodbye to you by name when you leave.
UPDATE (3rd try. Coco-no-go) I mentioned in my last review that I was going to go back to try the chicken strips because I assumed that's where all the white meat was going. Wrong! Instead I got bad frozen commercial strips. These were not even good quality 'fake' flaked and formed strips. They (should I say 'it' as I was only able to eat one of these former pink slime abominations) appear to be a no-name piece of protein and are so overly (artificially) spiced in an attempt to make them taste like chicken. Really, this place should be ashamed to have something like this on the menu considering their specialty is supposed to be chicken. On a side note, I also ordered a box of eight crispy chicken piece, and not a white piece in the lot--unless you call wings white, then there was plenty of...
Read moreMy wife is pregnant so she goes crazy about certain food every week, this week I found a place called chicken spot (former Coco chicken) after 3 days in a row and spend near to $90.00 dollars I got enough of this place. First day; all the sweet soy sauce spilled all over my leather car seats, then they offered me 20% off next purchase that I didn’t ask for, and didn’t redeem, second day I asked for a large rice (which they give in a small container, think of any Chinese restaurant small rice size same as the kimchi) they charged me $5.00 each, today went for the third time in a row and same as I did yesterday I asked for the sweet soy sauce on the side to avoid other spill, yesterday I got enough sauce today a ridiculous amount not enough to soak 2 pieces, so I asked for a little more sauce the young lady came with half of the extremely small container and says: you know we charge for extra sauce, so I got piss and told her to charge me whatever she charged me $1.53… I told her that 1.50 cost you a customer and walked away. Came to home told my wife enjoy that effing chicken cuz I won’t spend a dime in that place no more, she says: well I guess you’ll have to go to Seoul Fried Chicken in downtown 😝 anyways I wanna share this review because I really don’t support cheap places, neither attitudes. Thank you for that free meal but I’ll pass, reason why is because I never go to business trying to get free stuff, that why I didn’t claimed the 20% off because a lil mistake wasn’t enough reason to claim it. The portion of rice you sell as large is an small in any Chinese restaurant (think) we are talking about rice!!! Steamed rice. Chinese places charge $3.99 for the large one, I’m not telling you how to run your business, but, portions vs prices makes a huge difference so instead of a 400-500% profit maybe. 300% will not put you out of business and will make customers happy. Wish...
Read moreI was really excited to go to Coco's chicken but found out this is no longer branded Coco's. Now, I would consider myself a pretty devout friend chicken connoisseur so I was game to try the new ownerships version.
Food- The chicken is not as tender as it used to be, I think the marinade has changed.or the time in fryer is a little longer or the meat is from a different vendor but something was different, I've had Coco's maybe 25 times in last 3 years. The breast to rest ratio is off, getting 6 pieces of fried chicken - 4 breasts, 1 back, 1 drum is not a good mix and the other box had 5 breasts, 1 drum - even worse. The key part of Korean chicken is the breading and it is not the same, still crispy but just thinner.
Service- The Ramadhan discount was very nice BUT when the key front person taking orders suggests trying the new sauces, it might be a good idea to know what they taste like.. I'm pretty sure jalapeno sauce isn't just spicy.. is it sweet, is it thick or thin, is it green, who knows? Also when a customer asks for more than 2 tiny napkins for a 12 piece order of super saucy sticky chicken, another 2 tiny napkins is not enough.. don't be soo cheap, give the guy holding 2 boxes with sauce dripping out of it a handful.
Atmosphere- From what I can see by the massive change in reviews on google, ownership seems to have changed mid-late 2023 including the name change.. So I would say 7 months is long enough that the old branding can be completely replaced and the place cleaned up. There is very clearly a shift away from Korean, it seems inauthentic to me to propagate that old branding.
The chicken was still good but as I mentioned way too much white meat.. which only ends up being dry fried chicken.
I'd try them again but I'd love to see them under the new owners identity, not pretending to still be korean, when clearly...
