I came during the "soft opening" weekend. There was a limited selection of bakery items available. I tried the BBQ pork bun. As a side note, the BBQ pork buns in Chinatown (as have buns in general) have been shrinking over the years, with progressively less meat filling. The pieces of meat that make up the fillings have also continuously shrunk, and the proportion of saucy binder has increased. The verdict on the BBQ pork bun here? Decent bun size, good flavour, probably a little more meat than buns in Chinatown, but there was a lot of the "sauce" binder, which was actually very orange and gelatinous. Eat the bun with your eyes closed, because it looks weird. I wish the buns were not individually wrapped in cellophane and were boxed or paper bagged upon order, as there ends up being a lot of plastic waste. This could be a soft opening strategy - perhaps there is still intention to offer the buns differently when the bakery is fully operational?
I also ordered the beef brisket soup. It was on the salty side for me, but the flavor was really good. There was a reasonable six chunks of brisket, which were pretty tender. What was disappointing was the amount of vegetable and rice noodle. I might not be identifying the choy correctly, but it was a half of a four inch piece of a stalk of yu choy, plus a couple of pieces of the petiole. I'm not sure there was the equivalent of a full leaf in the bowl. As for the vermicelli rice noodles, it was small pieces on average 1 cm to 1 inch long. I was expecting longer pieces. I was more disappointed that there was probably about 1/4 cup's worth of those tiny noodle pieces. I think for the price of the soup, they could stand to be more generous with the noodles. There was a sprinkling of green onion. Overall, it was very tasty, but I wouldn't consider it a meal because of the insignificant amount of veg and noodle. Would I order it again? Yes, but I would have to take it home and add veggies and noodles to...
Read moreA nostalgic place from my childhood . I remember going to Hong cafe and bakery and my mom always ordered bbq pork buns/ puffs and the curry beef puffs and the egg tarts. Now that they are in Southcommon area I can get delivery which is what I did. I ordered thru Door Dash my childhood food memory items and when they arrived i was not disappointed at all.😊 My order came fresh and came with a compensation (not in the picture due to me devouring the roll 😊). Although they were shy of one bbq pork puff they still gave me the other two. ( order was 3 bbq pork puffs/3 curry beef puffs /2 egg tarts). Lets get to best part. The puffs themself were absolutely amazing. Each bite was delectable and had a buttery taste and that soft crisp noise you get when pastry is made right with puffs. Golden perfection!!! Curry beef puffs were spicy and right and would go well with just about any cold or hot drink. BBQ pork puffs were sweet and savory which made me smile.😊 Now lastly, the egg tarts the way how egg tarts should be made balanced 😊. The Swiss roll compensation like a cloud when you bite into it you can taste the cream and the cake. It was spongey and perfect 😊.
Thank you Garden Bakery I will be ordering from you again...
Read moreWe got the large BBQ pork noodle soup and the small brisket noodle soup. The BBQ one was super tasty, and the portion was massive. Even my boyfriend, who usually finishes an XL pho with no problem, thought it was a lot of food! We both really enjoyed the broth, noodles, veggies, and meat. It was all just really good!!
The brisket soup honestly surprised me. The meat was the softest brisket I’ve ever had, and the broth and noodles were amazing too. I was especially happy that the noodles were cooked perfectly—not too soft or too firm. This one felt like a hidden gem for me because I just loved it so much. The small size was super filling, and I don’t think I could’ve handled the large!
The lady who served us (maybe the owner?) was also really sweet, patient, and kind. The place has such a cute vibe and the service was great. I’d definitely come back and recommend...
