The moment I called The Sushi Chef, I was blown away on how courteous the staff who answered the phone. He politely asked me to wait on the phone as he was dealing with a customer at the store. After 30s, he talked to me and took all of my orders correctly. After 15 minutes drive to The Sushi Chef, my order was ready and they greeted me and it's amazing how friendly every staff at the restaurant, we are talking from the server, to the manager and to the sushi chefs. The take out package were all nicely prepared so by the time I got to my buddy's home, every food item were intact. The veggie tempura were still nice & hot by the time I delivered back to the buddy's home. The veggie tempura was crispy and nicely battered. However, I would prefer it has more variety. As you can see from this picture, it's a big portion of tempura which was amazing, but most likely were tempura yam, sweet potato and broccoli. I would luv to see more green beans, perhaps eggplants and more variety of veggies. Our sushi rolls were fresh and tasty. I also enjoyed my cooked food bento box that came with teriyaki salmon (nicely grilled and on point, not overcooked but juicy which I prefer). Bento box also came with spring rolls, a maki roll (3pcs), steam rice and teriyaki veggies. The Sushi Chef has a good variety of lunch special options. They are in good portion, good value and worthwhile especially it includes miso soup and salad along with each lunch special combo. It's not the best sushi that I had but it definitely does the job and I was grateful the Innisfil region actually have sushi restaurants around to serve the communities.

The best sushi restaurant in the Barrie area. And it’s not even that close. If you intend to come at peak dinner time on a weekend, there is a good chance of The Sushi Chef being fully occupied. I recommend the saba siyoyaki as an appetizer. It is grilled the perfection. Squeeze on some lemon juice and let your taste buds enjoy life. It is a must have. The sushi itself is high quality. The rice is perfectly cooked - not too hard, not too mushy, with just the right degree of “chewiness”. The amount of vinegar used to season the rice is on point. The rice is never at risk of falling apart when you pick it up. The fish is always fresh but that’s a basic expectation. What’s less common is the correct fish to rice ratio and The Sushi Chef nails it here too. The fish extends beyond the underlying rice and tapers off into a tail - beautifully presented. Finally, their spicy salmon rolls. Another must have. Everyone I have taken to The Sushi Chef cannot get enough of them. The Sushi Chef is operated by Japanese chefs and staff, which I did not expect in Thornton. I believe any person of any ethnicity can excel in preparing any type of cuisine, but I thought it noteworthy as many sushi restaurants even in the GTA are Korean or Chinese owned. The Sushi Chef would be a top choice at its price point even in the GTA. In the Barrie area, it has no equal.

This place was highly recommended to me by two friends that go very often and get takeout. Definitely glad I took the time and went when I was in the area. Some restaurants set them selves apart from others by the little things and Sushi Chef did just that. Stainless Steel chopsticks, even a bench to rest the chopsticks on. Clean restaurant and nice atmosphere. As is with all non AYCE places, the rolls were big but so was the shrimp tempura. By far the best shrimp tempura I’ve ever had. Spicy salmon roll was good, white tuna dragon roll was great. It’s not often where you order only two rolls and it comes out on the sushi boat, but that’s bonus points for presentation. The only knock on The Sushi Chef, comes from the sushi pizza. It was topped with Crab, Salmon and avocado. However the crab wasn’t very good. Simple is more, would have been perfect with just the salmon and avocado. Presentation for the sushi pizza was also a little awkward. Would be better to serve it on a smaller plate for it to stand out more. All in all, incredible place and I’ll definitely go again.

If you've never been here, do yourself a favour and go! We started going to The Sushi Chef when they were at their other location in Beeton. It is almost impossible to find a good Japanese restaurant so when we found this place we were very happy. We've never been disappointed by the food. It's delicious with an excellent presentation. The sushi is flavorful and always fresh. We always order way too much food because everything is so good and it's hard to resist. We usually start with an order of vegetable tempura which comes hot and it's never greasy. They obviously change their oil often because you never get an old oil taste in the tempura. We then usually order 2 sushi rolls and my husband gets the chicken katsu donburi and I usually try different things. Shawn #2 is one of the servers there and he couldn't be better. He is very polite, attentive and professional while still being friendly. Your cup or glass is never empty, because even when its busy, he keeps an eye on everything. I just can't say enough good things about him. Most people who come here are repeat customers. You know that because people are greeted by name when they walk through the door. It's actually quite amazing that Sean the owner and Shawn #2 can remember everyone's names. The restaurant itself is a comfortable, clean atmosphere with nice light jazz playing. Keep up the...
