A friend was visiting from Toronto and we decided to have a few beer and something to eat. Picaroons has delicious beer and the Roundhouse is a great environment- definitely a 5 star experience except for the food. We ordered nachos and two kinds of wings. The nachos were strange but tasty, lots of cheese, fresh jalapeños, queso fresco and ketchup. Yes, ketchup. The wings however were completely wrong. The first basket was supposed to be chipotle but there was no discernible chipotle flavour. It was more of a sweet and sour hot sauce. The second basket of wings were the real disappointment. They were supposed to be sriracha and lime but tasted of neither and they were inedibly hot. I included a photo of my refrigerator door with 3 bottles of sriracha, chili crisp, Cholula sauce, etc to illustrate that I’m quite familiar with the product and that I quite enjoy hot and spicy foods. We explained the issue to the staff and their response was that the lime juice increases the heat- and that’s the line they stuck too despite the fact that there was no lime flavour or sriracha flavour and the fact that both my guest and I are very familiar with that particular flavour combination. My friend tried reasoning with them and finally ended up dumping the wings in the garbage. We were treated like rubes that lack a palate and couldn’t take the heat when we were clearly served wings in the wrong sauce. I’ll be back for the beer but I’ll never eat...
Read moreConvenient location (especially in the summer, as it's at the end of the Bill Thorpe walking bridge) with an amazing view of the river and Southside waterfront. Had their new black IPA (The Vinyl Cut) which was tasty. They have some snacks made by the Real Foods team and serve The Whitney Coffee Co. coffee (lattes, espressos, etc.) and Picaroons merch (shirts, beer soap, growler carriers, etc.). No growler fills yet (waiting on the licence as of the time of this review) but that's not a deterrent.
Chill vibe with stools around the three outer walls (an outlet above the counter on each wall for the laptop crowd) with tables that seat 6 - 8 in the centre of the room. Walls are rough-hewn wood, with thick maple counters around the perimeter (the plank in front of me was actually bird's eye maple), industrial-looking light fixtures, and photos around the room feature the building's industrial past, in various states of repair (the last time I was inside, for example, it was a garage).
This place will be packed come summer so come check it out while the place is still flying...
Read moreGreat selection of drinks, friendly staff, and an amazing atmosphere. This is my absolute favourite place to come for drinks with friends. As we split off for the summer while school is off, we've all said to each other, it's not the parties or clubbing, or any other social event we miss, it's the laughs we've had with close friends at Picaroons. Whether you're inside or out, it's a great atmosphere. Prices are reasonable, with the added benefit of supporting a local company, and I love seeing all the dogs with their owners at the roundhouse, it was a pleasant surprise the first time I came! You look around Picaroons and dont see a single unhappy person, it is such a great community to be apart of. I can't wait to come back in the late summer when we all...
