Swiss Chalet — Restaurant in Grimsby

So I went into this store with very low expectations, I lived in Toronto for 10+ years and every year we went to get the "festive special!", I'd roll my eyes but the entire family would pile in and everyone but me would seemingly enjoy their meal. The chicken was always dry, and I would have to order extra chalet sauce to just stomach the dry chicken. Believe me, the "coupon" was never used in the new year, and the chocolates were the only thing I looked forward to.

Fast forward to now, it has been 6 years since I have had the festive special. So I've decided yeah I'll give it a try again, new location new part of Ontario maybe it got better?

Well.. let me tell you, I've never had chicken so juicy. The first time I came, the chicken had very crispy skin and was so very juicy. I thought it was a fluke, the service was fast I didn't have to wait half an hour and everyone was very friendly.

So here I am, 2nd time in the same month. I had to make sure it wasn't just a one off. I wasn't entirely disappointed, very juicy very nice. The skin wasn't crispy this time, but that's not 100% breaking my review here. The staff was friendly, it was very busy and didn't take too long to get seated. The atmosphere isn't too loud, everything is a nice low hum. (Not like the loud Christmas music being shoved into your ears in Toronto). Overall, everything was great. I'll absolutely be making my trip back in the new year. Its only the 10th of December, might come back in for a 3rd festive special.

The wife and I went in Friday night around 7:30pm for dinner and let me tell you it was beyond horrible. Upon being seated we were told they were out of ribs (during their all you can eat rib special) , no problem we were there for chicken. We both opted for water with lemon as we both struggle with acid reflux but didn’t expect that there would be a fly in my drink which the waitress just switched out for another that I was a tad reluctant to drink.

We got an app which was the garlic cheese loaf but while we were ordering our waitress let us know they were out of shredded cheese but would be using Parmesan as a substitution. When the app got to the table we were greatly disappointed because not only was it basically just a warmed up bun with 10 tiny tomatoes thrown on top but they had actually used Kraft cheese slices instead of the parm promised. It was awful.

We picked away at it and waited for dinner. My wife got Cesar salad and was asked if bacon was okay which she replied “yes please”. Once it got to the table we were informed that they had ALSO run out of bacon after asking us if we would like it on our salad.

Chicken was dry and bun tasted stale, the only thing we actually enjoyed was the French fries and chalet sauce which arrived 5 minutes AFTER the first meal with the salad.

It was one of the worst experiences we’ve had at a Swiss Chalet and we most definitely will not be back to this location.

We went here on the way home from vacation. Generally Swiss chalet you can be in and eaten in about an hour. We arrived while it was not busy at all 2 or 3 other tables at 3:00. We ordered fairly quickly and our appetizer was out quite quickly. This is where the wait began. From when we ordered to when we received our mains it took 55 minutes. With tired children from a long drive this felt like an eternity, watching tables be seated and receive food long before us. The food when it came was cooked well and all was fairly good. We asked for our bill when our server finally came to see us. It was not too long and we received that there was a small error on the bill. No problem that is a simple mistake. However after leaving us the bill we didn’t see our server again for another 10 minutes. Needing to ask another server to have her come see us. The error was corrected and after a little over 2 hours we were able to make our way out of there. Generally I like Swiss chalet. The service today was simply so slow I could not believe it.
