I visited Queenston Fish and Chips for the first time yesterday and it was way better than I had hoped or expected. There were however a couple of quirks that I was not prepared for. The first, was that they only accept cash, no debit or alternate means of paying. Luckily I had enough cash on me to cover the tab, otherwise it was a trip to a bank machine. The other quirk, they had no malt vinegar. 😲 A chip shop without malt vinegar is bizarre, unheard of even, but there you go. I was told that no one was working because of covid and none was to be had.LOL So, instead of eating in the car, I took them home as I have many varieties of malt vinegar and the meal would be saved. I'm kind of glad that I did as this is one heck of a good plate of F&C, a lovely bit of fish and proper chips from fresh spuds, none of your frozen rubbish here. Moving on to the mushy peas, they were OK but not great, too stodgy and the wrong flavour or type of pea, but they were OK. If the owners of this shop want to know about mushies, I am only too happy to help out and show them how to make them properly. My mother and grandmother ran fish restaurants in Scotland and London (UK) for over 90 years and I learned the dark art of mushy pea making at an early stage in my life. Before I go next time, I'll make the mushies at home so that they perfectly complement the meal rather than having to make do with a not quite right substitute. I say well done to the folks that run this place as it takes a lot to impress me with F&C and they certainly have nailed the important part, the rest is just commentary and observation, get the mushy peas right and you'll never get me out of the...
Read moreAs much as I dislike writing negative reviews, I feel like this one really has to be done. We live in the area for 2 years now, & have ordered from this place many times, each new time hoping our visit that day, would be more pleasant then the others. Few of the times I have done the ordering & picking up, my son has also done the same for us & we have had friends pickup orders on their way here for dinner, and I must say this... Each and every single time we have ordered and picked up, every one of us has had the WORST experiences! We are all different ages & types of people and we have all been treated the same way each time, like absolute DIRT! They are always RUDE when we call into order & they even more RUDE when we pickup! They honestly make you feel as though you are a nuisance, they rush you, they get angry when you ask for simple courtesies such as salt, pepper or a plum sauce to dip with & even then they will only give you 1 tiny little sauce packet when you clearly have multiple orders. The food is GREASY & hard to chew. I have always forgiven places like this, giving the benefit of doubt that perhaps someone (employee) is having a rough day, but this is every single time, every staff member there for 2 yrs now. I will never order there again & I will make sure that noone I know will either! I will forever spread the word of the awful horrible customer service & the not nice feelings that they will have you feeling when you leave that place! Its a shame as I am a full supporter of local businesses, but this one, I warn you, dont give them any of your money, they do ABSOLUTELY...
Read moreA family member suggested this place for Good Friday (2021). We imagined the place would be busy due to the holiday and it was.
I called to place a order on the phone and the lady taking orders said they could not sell shrimp that day 😐.... but then she was told she could. (Oh.. great!). She was very straight to the point no bs kinda tone. (She sounded like she was annoyed already and they JUST OPENED 5 mins PRIOR). placed the order gave a pick up time. When we arrived the place was so clean! Even the back splash and hood vents. It is a small place so the 5 people working behind the counter were crammed together. I paid $100 (including the tip) for both mine and my family members order, we were late and I knew it was change the quality of the meal.
Got home and first thing I noticed was NO TARTAR 😫😫😫... The fish pieces were small, so it looked like they gave 2 pieces for each meal due to the size and everything was luke warm. (Totally on me cause I was late) . But how do you forget the tar tar sauce on a good Friday!!! Checked in with my family members meal and she was missing coleslaw, gravy, a meal and tartar sauce. (They write the order on the bag so I'm not sure how they missed that).
Other than that, I can't say it was good. I want to give the place a try again on a 'non-holiday'. My experience could have been a one...
