The Bún bò Huế got me. There's been a couple of places that have decent Bún bò Huế, and so it was hard to believe that there was anything better until a friend strongly recommended it -- I'm glad he did.
Most Bún bò Huế that I've tried in Edmonton are either on the shrimpy side, or lemongrass side of the soup base, which isn't bad, but it misses out on the sweetness from a good pork/beef broth. Co Do Hue Dine in & Take Out has the whole package.
The pork/beef broth brings the whole dish together that moves the soup towards the sweeter side rather than the sour/shrimpy side (there are still traces, but it's more balanced and less overwhelming). The chilli spice is not overwhelming, and compliments the broth very well -- if you can't take the heat, I would suggest asking them to put less rather than taking it out completely. Feel free to substitute the round rice noodles for pho noodles, but for us, the round rice noodles are a personal favorite. One of big bonuses for me is their homemade chả (Vietnamese sausage), and meatballs. Good texture, flavor, and elasticity. Some meatballs are very peppery at other restaurants, but this is not the case at Co Do Hue Dine in & Take Out. The shank slices (or digital muscle) are done well - not dry, overdone, or thinly sliced. They seem very intentional in delivering a very good Bún bò Huế. With such attention to detail, it deserves another visit... And another one etc. I was advised to move away from the Pho, so I was unable to try it. This review is based solely on the Bún bò Huế. Can't wait for...
Read moreI am a bad critic today even if it is my favorite restaurant. I love to eat here but today I was really hungry and craving to eat vermicilli. I called on my way so they can cook it and I can eat it right away but they said I can only call for take out. So I hurried on my way because I still have 35 minutes to eat there before my appointment. I arrived in 2 minutes and ordered right away. Unfortunately, more than 20 minutes has passed only those people came after me was served. I asked why my order is taking so long, the server told me there was many order of soup and your order will come out soon. So I am not the priority since my order is different. It was a mistake going there today and treated this way. Maybe if I ordered take out was faster or ordered soup instead of vermicelli it could have been faster. I paid early while waiting for my food feeling emotional, then my food came out not as beautifully presented like before. They gave me 10% discount from being late but I always give 15% tip. The vermicilli I used to enjoy no longer enjoyable to eat, the grilled chicken on top of my vermicilli is lightly or hurriedly grilled that the middle part was not cooked well, chicken is pale, and does not look appetizing anymore. I felt crying inside from anger and I need to eat fast to catch my appointment. I took a few bite and end up taking my food out. So if you eat there maybe around 11-12, order soup instead. I would still eat but I think I will keep reminding them to what kind of service they...
Read moreWhat a nice little Vietnamese restaurant! I will be coming back here again :-)
I went here on Sept 3rd w/ my partner as I was on the hunt for newer options than La Pagode (I'm a regular at La Pagode and even though I love it there, I still like to try other places because I'm half Vietnamese I need to have Vietnamese food). I chose to get Bún bò Hu (I love it more than Pho). I didn't mind that the place was mostly self-serve: get your own utensils and water. It's a small place but it seemed to get good business when we were there! As for my BBH, I actually appreciate the cabbage on top as to remain somewhat traditional. It's always nice to have that extra texture in the soup. The flavour was spot on. Not too spicy and not mild. It was SO flavourful. I kept in mind that other reviewers said the the BBH broth was too salty, but for my first bowl it wasn't salty at all. The male owner (I'm assuming), made lovely conversation with us and happy with our response to their food. Will be returning to...
