It's been awhile since I've been back to India's Taste (since pre-covid actually I think).
Recently came back with friend's to celebrate a bday.
I noticed a couple of decor updates as soon as I walked in (the seating layout remains the same but there's extra caging on the raised floors now).
The buffet area has definitely shrunk a little bit in size. The lamb tawa station is gone now. They've moved some items to beside the dessert area.
I'm not opposed to the buffet shrinking in size as the quality of the food seems to have remained (although the price doesn't reflect this). The butter chicken is still super delicious and complex. One thing I do wish for when I come here is for the chicken to be cut into slightly smaller chunks (they're absolutely massive). The goat curry and goat vindaloo are cut into perfect sized chunks.
One thing that's changed for the better is the naan! They used to only offer regular naan for buffet. Now they ask you which naan you want! We kept ordering more garlic naan (which is SO GOOD BTW).
The dessert stations here have never really tickled my fancy that much. I do like the gulaab jamun and also tried stuffing ice cream into my panipuri (pretty cool combo, crispy on top of soft). You can buy kulfi bars from the refrigerated container by the entrance. I kinda wish they provided kulfi as part of the buffet tbh.
But yea, the prices have kept going up sadly. Used to be $16 for weekend dinner buffet pricing. Then $23, then $27. The current pricing for dinner buffet on weekends is $31. I agree with the other reviewers who have stated that this buffet should be priced under $25 to justify for the shrinking of the buffet variety and selection. A mango lassi used to cost $5 and now they are charging almost $10 for one!
Because of the pricing and slight shrinking of variety, I have to deduct a star. However, the food (AND mango lassi) are still amazing quality so for that, I will keep them at 4 stars. Still the best indian buffet around the Richmond...
Read moreOk, this is my absolute favourite indian restaurant. It tastes like home cooked food. The food is never oily or overly salty and heavy. Yes, you feel full after eating, but you don't feel gross.
We went for the buffet a few times, but takeout more often. The following are items we usually get: •Malai Kofta •Biryani •Saag Chicken •Fish Pakora
Malai kofta is mind-blowing. The kofta is just a soft, pillowy ball of paneer, potatos, and almonds. The sauce is perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of spice. The chicken biryani is probably the best item on the menu. Soft juicy chicken that's fully marinated and loaded with flavour. It's served with yogurt. Saag chicken is spicy with the same juicy chicken and loads of spinach and green chili. Pureed spicy spinach and chicken, simple ingredients but very flavourful. Fish pakorey are the best snack food when drinking. I would say it pairs perfectly with a gin and tonic. I think they use Basa, its coated in a crispy tandoori spice batter. Served with mint chutney and radish.
The dining space is very clean and bright. It has a nice neighbourhood restaurant vibe but also feels elegant. The buffet is very popular, and the price is great for the number of varieties you select from. The buffet is well maintained, cleaned, and replenished regularly. Service is attentive and quick.
The owners are usually at the front, and they are both very nice and pleasant to chat with. Everyone on their staff is friendly and ready to look after you. This makes coming back regularly an easy choice.
They recently changed their takeout packaging. I'm not a huge fan. The containers are tall as opposed to wide. Malai kofta does not lend itself to be packed in a tall container. You end up cutting into the kofta as you spoon it out. They should look into the same packaging but in a shorter, wider shape. It would present the takeout food better.
We will always come back here, and I always recommend it to anyone who asks for a good...
Read moreOne of the best Indian buffets I have been to. The restaurant itself is located in an industrial area with warehouse showrooms but the interior is quite good. Surprisingly for an Indian restaurant, there were quite a lot of Chinese patrons enjoying delicious Indian food, which was a happy sight :) We went for the Sunday lunch buffet and I couldn't even taste all the items on the menu 😭. They had at least 6 non veg starters in the menu including wings and tawa lamb (missed eating this one) but all the items I tasted were finger lickin good. The tandoori chicken was a bit of a disappointment - as with tandoori chicken at any buffet. I also tried the paneer tikka, which wasn't the freshest there is, but tasty nevertheless. The fish pakora and schezwan chicken were on point, as was the butter chicken and lamb curry which had plenty of soft mutton pieces compared to a muttom curry at other Indian buffets in a similar price range. I saw the staff refill portions at regular intervals. The garlic naan smelt good too but I couldn't taste it because it wasnt fresh when I wanted to taste with the butter chicken and goat curry. I didn't bother calling the staff because I was almost full anyways. The vegetable noodles was 😋. For desserts there's fruit custard 👌, ras malai 👎, carrot halwa, gulab jamun, assorted pastries and ice cream - a generous selection of the best Indian sweets. They looked and/or tasted fresh. The buffet was very busy with several patrons waiting, sign of good restaurant. It also means the food would be prepared regularly and would therefore be fresh. The only complaint I would have is for the staff pestering us to have the naan when we were still having starters, and not being around when I wanted a fresh naan but that doesn't take away from the tasty food served here - hopefully they improve this aspect of their service next time. Will be back when the next desi food...
