My wife and I decided to head to Rhubarb for our anniversary dinner. We had read good reviews online so we thought "great! let's try it out!". The restaurant itself is nice looking in a 'rustic charm', cottagey kind of way. We ordered two appetizers - escargot and French onion soup which were both tasty but my escargot had toasts that were overly charred. I did get a couple of replacement toasts so all good there.
It was the mains where everything went south. My wife ordered the filet mignon with blue cheese butter and I ordered the half rack of lamb. Cutting into my lamb, I noticed it was utterly raw. My wife's steak was blue rare when we had both asked for them to be cooked medium. Not a difficult request. Or rather, it shouldn't have been.
The server argued with me about the doneness of my lamb before taking it back to the kitchen. I know what raw meat looks like. I asked for a menu to decide on a different choice, thinking to avoid another disappointment with the lamb dish. My wife had asked the server to simply ask the chef to cook the same steak to medium, "no need to cook another one" - we're both very agreeable people and not hard to please. The server returned and told us that "yes, your lamb was rare" (again, it was raw) "but he (the chef) said that "that is the way your steak is going to be cooked".
Sorry? So, he's not willing to cook it to the medium doneness my wife asked for initially? Then why bother asking us how we want it cooked in the first place? Just take the menu and tell us "the chef will cook your steak the way he sees fit", which is what happened anyway.
Apparently, the chef is the owner. No apology, no "so sorry we didn't cook your meal properly, what can we do to accommodate?". We just got told that the owner wasn't willing to cook our meal to our request. I was honestly kind of shocked at how we were treated. You're charging good money for an experience and leaving the customer sorely disappointed and regretting their decision to patronize your establishment.
My wife asked to talk to the manager but we reconsidered after we realised that there would be no resolution to our concerns due to the fact that it was the owner who had not only not cooked our meal properly, but sent his employee back out with zero accountability or apology for the bad experience.
We left feeling extremely disappointed, having wasted $100 (again, no adjustment on the bill for the poor experience - not expected, but some...ANY...gesture would've been nice, an apology would've sufficed) on what we thought was going to be a nice anniversary dinner. We won't be going back and we will certainly not recommend it to...
Read moreWe regularly eat dinner out and are new to this area and thought we would try Rhubarb's out. We arrived without a reservation and were happy they could get us a table all things considered. We waited around 10-15 minutes for a spot to be free and cleaned. The waitress seemed pretty nice but we waited a long time before they took our order. We both have different allergies and requested some items to be removed from our burgers, simple request but with allergies it's so much more important the attention to details. We waited almost 35-40 minutes before the food came out. When the order came my fiance was given my burger and I was given His burger. I would have given him mine but it was touching the salad on the plate which he's also allergic to. So they took the food back and remade it. They gave us a passing apology for the mix up and made us new ones which took another 15-20ish minutes to receive.
This has happened to us sadly on occasion at other chain restaurants and mom and pop owned establishments and have been offered some sort of discount off the bill, 5-50% off, compensatory free dessert or drinks and we've even had items removed from our bill altogether for the inconvenience. When asked about what their policy is here, when i saw i was being charged full price, and got nothing but attitude from the server. A "we remade it for u and u consumed it so you have to pay for it". Even if u don't offer anything for us having to wait for so long or for us almost getting sick, because someone made a huge mistake on both our orders, we could have used a genuine apology for the inconvenience and potentially life-threatening mistakes. Food allergies are no joke for those of us that sadly have them. We will never come back to this restaurant for these reasons and will encourage all of our friends and neighbours to not go as well. We will go back to your...
Read moreI really love good food but more important is the attention to details and the passion folks have in preparing and presenting it that turns my crank We decided to visit Rhubarb at 4:30 on a recent Saturday. As we were greeted the host said they were working on getting a new air conditioner so it may be a little hot inside. It was ok, things happen. we sat down I ordered something for dinner the waiter came back and said sorry no we’re out of that , that’s OK , so he left the menu with me I ordered the second choice , he came back again and said they were out of that item as well. They also had a little side menu that had the daily specials, for the life of me I can’t figure out if you can’t make the items you’ve got in your main menu why would you ever have daily specials. Why not pare down your menu and make a few good things really really well I ordered a Cornish hen which came very well presented on a plate that was very hot that’s always a good sign to me , my wife ordered the halibut it was well presented on a nice warm plate .For $28 the portions were very small and I left still wanting more food. On the way out I decided to use the washroom which were quite nice and tidy but the taps weren’t properly secured to the sinks and you could actually pull the whole unit up on both of them not sure why they wouldn’t just have a plumber fix all that , again its the attention to little details that make an experience good or bad. We love to support local establishments but come on guys get your...
