After hearing the ad on CINA radio 1650AM many times, we visited SWAGRUHAS Dosa Home in Malton, next to the famous Malton Gurdwara. This restaurant is in the new Punjabi Plaza next to the gurdwara and has ample parking. But we were disappointed with the taste and quality of food. I have eaten Andhra type dosas and accept the spice level is higher than typical Udipi dosas, but the spice here was too strong and not nice and was oily as well. Service takes forever as only two boys waiting on tables in a place that has more than 15 tables! The spices are hot to very hot, even unbearable if you order certain dosas (stay clear of the Chettinaad dosa, unless you want to sit in the toilet all day next day!). The menus do not have any spice level indicators at all, and look torn up for a place that is relatively new. Interiors are clean, yet lacking in any style whatsoever. Bathrooms are frugal, but spacious. Layout of tables not well thought out either. I usually judge a south Indian restaurant on the basis of the sambhar, and I give the sambhar here a 2 out of 5. The chutneys are a tepid affair as well. Some of our dosas were burnt at the edges. This place has a lot of potential, if they bring in a new cook or radically alter the current one's style, bring in an interior designer, and hire more waiting staff. On the other hand, waiters are polite, place is spacious and clean, and dishes are economical. Let us see how it does in the long run. My best wishes to SWAGRUHAS...
Read moreFirst of all, id like to point out that I am not indian and this was my second time ever eating southern food. Upon entering i noticed that the restaurant was busy and this was around 9:30PM, an hour away from closing time. This was a very great indication regarding both the food and service. As I took a seat, I was immediately given a menu and a cold glass of water. I asked the waitress for the most popular Appetizer and Dosa on the menu. She recommended that I ordered the Dahi Vada, which are 2 fried lentil donuts served with sweet spiced yogurt with garnishes and the Chilly Garlic masala dosa, which comes with a special homemade spicy chutney coated rice & lentil crepe, stuffed with potato masala. Both dishes were presentable and very delicious. They also came one after the other, so the waiting period for food was short.
Cons: The restaurants floors and tables were dirty, but considering it was late in the evenings and near closing time, that was slightly understandable.
However, regarding my experience with the restaurant, i would rate it a 3.5/5 for the food however, i was happy with the customer service which bumped...
Read moreI’ve been a regular customer, but my recent visits have been quite disappointing. It seems there’s been a noticeable effort to cut costs in ways that directly affect the customer experience.
First, the amount of chutney served with the dosas has become almost negligible — it’s barely enough for a single bite, let alone the entire dish. Today, I ordered the idli sambar which I usually enjoy, but I was shocked to find that each idli was cut in half and I was served just three halves — effectively giving me only one and a half idlis. That’s barely a snack, not a meal.
If costs have gone up, it would be far better to increase the price slightly rather than drastically reducing the portion size. Giving customers only half of what they’re used to is not the way to go — it feels like the value and integrity of the meal are being compromised.
Unfortunately, with this kind of approach, I don’t see myself coming back. It’s disappointing to see such a low-effort, low-value mentality take over what used to be a...
