My cousin from California remembered her meal of. four years ago and so we went for a second visit on my wife's birthday. At first I had a sense that the panache of the restaurant had diminished somewhat but the thought was more likely because the front terrace window was not open.
I tasted both salads ordered. The arugula salad was far superior to the romaine of the Caesar. Both servings were generous but the light delicate dressing on the arugula was a perfect balance to the bitterness of the leaf. Main course choices were predominately bavette de boeuf. Seasoning was excellent though cooking was overdone to my taste. My lamb shoulder was excellent. I expected a stewed preparation but instead received large portions of grilled well seasoned tender meat shucked from the bone. My wife's duck was also excellent and with two bottles of Francis Coppola white chardonnay later, we were now ready for the next course. An outstanding tatin de pomme portion served as the birthday cake while an excellent ricotta square was a soft and smooth sampler for those who needed more sugar than just an option in their coffee. Service was special from knowledge of the menu, to timing, guidance and personality. The waitresses nose rings and Gus', the chefs' cowboy hat aside, the sophistication of the food far outstrips the humble nature of its...
Read moreWe were a group of 3 people participating in David Ferguson’s « Cooking class ». Great format and experience for both food and drink. We were all given the menu and recipes.
Explanations, and demonstration were given throughout the evening about what we were about to eat, how to prepare it, make it or cook it.
The restaurant being closed, and the group being voluntary kept small, it makes for a cool evening. The location is an intimate, local, very Montreal, that looks and feels lived-in. The class takes place at the bar behind which David drives it. And it’s not formal. It’s more akin to dinner with close friends.
If you are looking for something different for a special occasion …on a Tuesday (!) …well, better book early. They only have a few of these events per year.
And by the way, Gus only takes reservations from humans. Not booking engines. You have to talk to them. How...
Read moreWe had an absolutely fabulous time at Restaurant Gus and the food was downright delicious. I was actually giddy just reading the menu. I'm still thinking about the caesar salad with caviar. It honestly was the best caesar salad I've ever had; crisp, creamy, and perfectly seasoned. Juicy lardons with the creamy saltiness of caviar and the touch of heat & acidity from the peppers made for an incredible balance. All the dishes were exceptional, really. And that onglet - so damn good! The service was attentive, warm and friendly, and the cocktail & wine suggestions were awesome. The team all seem genuinely happy to be there and that speaks volumes about the leadership. There is no shortage of great restaurants in Montreal and Chef David truly has created an exceptional dining experience with Restaurant Gus that stands out from the crowd. We will...
