Absolutely the worst cake I have ever eaten. I ordered a very special birthday cake for my 60th birthday. The icing was supposed to be royal purple. But when I went to pick it up the icing was pink. Not only that the cake was shaped in two elongated narrow tubes, This was supposed to be a two tiered cake but I expected a normal looking cake. The young female employee argued with me that the icing colour was mauve. Then the young woman said they would add another layer of icing with the colour I wanted for no charge. My party was scheduled to start in a few hours at a very fancy hotel so I really had no choice. When I returned to pick up the cake I was shocked to see tons of pink round balls that looked like bubble gum placed all around my cake. I felt as though they were mocking me. I had ordered a cake for a mature woman and the cake looked as though it was made for a six year old child. Upon tasting the cake the icing was sickly sweet because of the two layers and the cake was dried out. We had left overs and after three days the second layer of icing turned pink. That was when I realized the cake I ordered was already three days old when I picked it up. They charged me $230.00 for a three day old cake made for a child. I am extremely disappointed. Hearthstone Artisan Bakery is one of Nanaimo's hidden treasures that deserves to be placed front and center for all to enjoy. Located in Nanaimo South, not far from the Highway 19 and 19a split, across the highway from Rona. Hearthstone also frequents many of the Nanaimo region's wonderful farmer's markets throughout the year. The bakery serves up delectable artisan breads and stunning pastry delights. The bread is fresh, hearty loaves of regular favourites like my favourite sourdough anywhere, as well as unique daily specials. The sausage rolls and savory daily flatbread alone is well worth the drive out. The many diverse and delectable pastry offerings are a delight to behold and a joy to try. From smooth rich cheesecakes, creamy macaroons, velvety fine cakes with scrumptious butter cream frosting, perfect little cream puffs and eclairs, fruity danish and the single finest assortment of Nanaimo Bars I've ever come across. I recently ordered a birthday cake for my daughter from Hearthstone bakery. I am in Mexico for two months and of course unable to go to the bakery and look at samples so it was all done online and purely on faith from viewing the website. Firstly, I must say that the staff went out of their way to accommodate my request which wasn’t really easy . I wanted a specific Profile for the cake, and it had to be delivered to my daughter where she works during a specific hour. The cake that arrived at her place of work between 230 and 330 just like they promised was a work of art. And apparently, even though I never got to taste it, it was a slice of heaven.
