We like the foods here, and been here few times, but I was extremely angry when i went here today. I have to waited to seated, It's absolutely ok because we no reservation. oh, They were extremely slow for cleaning. Later, We were sitting there 20 mins with no water, i tried to order my food, the waitress came to me said one second, she walked directly to the reservation table to grab their order even they just sit down 2 seconds. I felt It was ridiculous, so i said sorry i need to leave. By the way, We didn't even get water when we leave. Changing your waitress or do more training, otherwise you will lose more customers. New reply for the owner: we shared the experience not only for expressing anger, but also expect the better service, you think we exaggerate the situation because the "two seconds"… i have to say your waitress told us to wait a second, did she exaggerate as well… i just want to say they just sit down a few minutes.anyway, at least we should get water in 20 mins. I rescore it because it's the only authentic Japanese restaurant in Nanaimo area, really shouldnt let the service influence the restaurant's reputation, we will come back when the service...

i was excited to try this because the original wa-ku on bowen is probably my favourite place to eat in nanaimo. it did not disappoint!!! i had heard on social media that this restaurant focuses on appy-style dishes more than the bowen location, hence the "izakaya" name, and i certainly felt that was true. but i love love love appies so im not complaining!

i got takoyaki (my favourite japanese snack ever), chikuwa, and the vegetarian ramen. i have had the takoyaki and vegetarian ramen at the bowen location and i would say the taste for both dishes is the same at this location (which is to say they were delicious, of course), but this was the first time i have ever tried chikuwa. omg it was amazing. i will definitely be ordering it again in the future.

i think this would be a good place to drink with friends and eat yummy food. its also good outside of that, but i think that is what the menu is mostly aiming for (again, hence the name). i will...

That chinky eyed black hair lady server was the worst i have ever met. She’s rude. No courtesy nor pleasant attitude to customers. We get in the restaurant didn’t approach us knowing that they have no customer that much but just 2 table occupied. She took our order wrong. Did not apologized and when we asked the manager, she even looked proud and arrogant. What a shame that she shouldn’t worked on a place where attitude is the most important thing. We have been there many times and this wasn’t her first time to me but this is the worst she showed. I hope she just laid at home rather than showing up with that frowned face. Worst...

I was super excited to come here after they announced they were opening a new location, and it didn't disappoint. I came for ramen but was pleasantly surprised when I saw the variety of appetizers on the menu. Super cool to have an authentic Izakaya in town! I had a hard time choosing, but I ended up with the grilled salmon, potato croquettes and takoyaki. Everything was delicious, as per usual. Can't wait to come back and try something new next time.

Japanese couple operated restaurant, very good service and nice people, I have to wait for 10mins over the weekend at 8:30pm, full house and people waiting outside. Reman is good but I am expected the soup to be more rich, we had tonkotsu noodle, the Chashu is not fatty, it can be more juicy, the egg was not warm enough, but I would expected they will improve on my next visit. Nice people and good sake.

We have been missing our ramen up in Oceanside so was happy to see this new place open up. The menu and atmosphere seemed really decent, but we must have arrived on a bad day because imho, 90 minutes is just too long for a quick Ramen lunch. The ramen was okay but didn’t really make up for the long wait for service. I’ll give it another try during the week sometime.
