The River Mill Restaurant was the December choice of a group of retirees who get together once a month or so for lunch. I recall the River Mill was Clark Day's very first Kingston restaurant before he moved on to Clarks on the Bay, Clarks on King and other restaurants.
The River Mill Restaurant is located on the east side of the restored Woolen Mill which is now the location of numerous professional firms and other businesses such as the Whig-Standard, Focus Fitness, a climbing wall and a spa. The River Mill has a beautiful view overlooking a tributary of the St. Lawrence River and the views beyond.
The River Mill also has a separate room for private parties and groups and its own closet to hang up our coats. After being served drinks and chatting, our group sat at four tables joined in a square so that there were four people on each side but none in the middle.
We had only one server for our group of sixteen so it took a while to order our lunches and a much longer time to have them served. I certainly enjoyed chatting and catching up with the person on either side of me. However, there is more opportunity for group conversations if there are people across from you as well people on either side. My favorite venues for our get-togethers are places with round tables where you can both talk with the people on either side as well as those across the table.
When I received my vegetarian sandwich and cauliflower soup, I enjoyed my sandwich but the soup was cooled off. The next time I go to the River Mill, I will not be sitting in the private room but out front with just my spouse or another couple. I will also enjoy their very...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreStopped in with my wife for a quick sample off the menu as we planned on going to two other spots in kingston to make the most out of our kingston experience. We were looking for Chef inspired dishes, not just a steak and mash. I give fair and honest reviews.
Soup of the day was great. Carrot ginger, Simple and flavorful Beautifully seasoned. Lobster not so much, we had decided on this dish before we got to restaurant. Sounded great on menu just lacked flavor. Lobster was less then luke warm, lobster bisque had no flavor at all as well as risotto. It was so bland, a little more butter and seasoning would have done wonders. Root vegetable where great, perfecty cooked but the STARS of the dish bring it all down. The tall gentleman who served us was a welcome treat, funny and very attentive. 5 stars for him. Restaurants has an old atmosphere, carpet, old decor and colour scheme but great location and view. Could use an update on drink menu wine list is great. Also had seafood Nicoise which missed the mark. Octapuswas over cooked and tough, flavors on dish just don't work, trying to put to much in one plate. Try something else off the menu. Again great service and view. Better options in kingston else where. Hope they bring this spot back to glory, i will come back and try it again and hope it was just an off night. To all those giving it 5 stars, try explaining what you ordered. Makes for a more informative and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOn June 20, 2025 in the morning, we held an interment service for my Mom. I made a reservation well in advance to have a luncheon at River Mill after my Mom's service. The weather was beautiful! When we arrived, they were not ready for us. We confirmed thirty-five guests, and there were only three 4 x 4 tables set up in a small, drab room. We tried to address the issue right away with Colin, but he stonewalled us. Colin stated that we reserved a āstanding receptionā, and he saw that our guests were elderly. Some of them even had walkers. We were told that there would be candles on the tables, and there was nothing on the tables. We were crammed up in this room at a riverfront restaurant with a view of the parking lot, and there was no offer to seat us somewhere else. The main dining area was sparsely occupied, and the outside deck area was vacant also. Colin is the owner. He didnāt seem interested in making us pleased with our experience. Anthony, our server, did an excellent job trying to make our family and friends comfortable and happy. I planned this event from Florida for my parentsā Canadian family and friends. I made the arrangements with Colin. I put a lot of thought and time into hosting a nice event. It is unfortunate that I was shocked and embarrassed in front of my Canadian family...
