The only reason I didn't give this two stars is because the service was quite good. Exceptional for this city, but would be on par for a restaurant of this type in most other locales. Brockville is in the Twilight Zone as far as what is considered to be "acceptable" customer service, so this restaurant should be appreciated for that.
As for the food... this is what is really lacking, and the portions and proportions are way off. I had the Pub Curry and found it to be of little value, especially with the $6.50 add-on for the blackened chicken. If it weren't for this the meal would have consisted of about a one-cup portion of "curry", about 1 ½ cup portion of over-cooked rice, and a slab of chewy "naan" bread... for $19. Add on the $6.50 for the protein and that is one over-priced dish. They should at least include a side of some sort with it.
I've had lots of different kinds of curry in my life and today's version was not something that I would consider to fit into any classification, other that "western version, restaurant grade". Nothing special about this at all. The chicken was good though.
Will I go there again? Oh probably. I just don't have the patience for snotty servers who lack the interpersonal skills to work in hospitality and make it abundantly clear that they are only there for your money. So Barley Mow definitely wins on the customer service. And, as an added bonus, I do believe they sponsor some local minor league teams. So community presence gets extra points in my book. They just need to up the value for money spent and they will have a...
Read moreI have never ever left a business a bad review, no matter what. But, my experience today at this place has left me quite incensed. I understand that a place like this depends on locals for its bread and butter, but the utter lack of attention and snarkiness I encountered as a one-off visitor was shocking. I admit, I may have walked in through the wrong door. But, there is no sign on the sidewalk saying one should go to the front door further down. I walk in. Sit down at the bar and wait. Not a single greeting or smile from the staff. A good 5 to 10 minutes later, a server asks what I want. I ask for a beer. She's says she needs a minute, so I said, take your time. "Oh I will," she responds in a mock agreeable way. I decide then, I'm going to have the beer and leave. Not staying for dinner. When it comes time to pay, I pay with cash. "Oh cash," says the server, looking annoyed and angrily counting change out of the till. I originally left a $2 tip on the $9.75 check. It sat on the counter for over 10 minutes while I drank my beer as fast as I could. As I was leaving, I decided to not to leave even the $2 and took it back. Edit: Two weeks later with no response. Wow. You...
