Living in the neighborhood, I've come to MHK many times and my experience can best be described as inconsistent. I've had a 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5* experience. First off, I'd say the restaurant has improved since the renovation less than a year ago. The restaurant is much nicer inside now, but I'm not sure with their prices if they're trying to be a casual spot or a nicer restaurant. The last time I went in, there was a couple dominating the restaurant by having a loud conversation through speaker phone throughout their meal and the restaurant didn't do anything about it. I dont think that is courteous to other patrons for the couple to do so, but if people are rude and ruining the experience for others, I think it's the restaurant's responsibility to say something. It gives the restaurant an AYCE or fast food vibe which I don't think it's going for. The time I went before that, I felt like the service and attention we received was more like a higher-end establishment. So it's a bit hit and miss depending on who's working. My husband really enjoyed his rolls and finds them tasty and interesting. As a vegan, I find the veggie rolls quite simple and boring and so many have cheese or egg in them. I'd love a more extensive veggie menu with fun and yummy rolls like my fave sushi restaurants in Ottawa. Despite it being around the corner from me, it's not my go to sushi spot unfortunately. I keep giving it another chance when I don't feel like driving, but until they add some more vegan options and tighten their ship, it won't...
Read moreThis is the worst sushi and customer service I have ever received.. fish is not fresh and smelled bad, and was difficult to eat . the spicy salmon and tuna rolls are stacked with tempura which was an unfortunate surprise as the menu does not say that they contained tempura. I guess the owner wants to make it seem like they are selling you fish but in reality the rolls are full of batter. When I called to complain the owner completely dismissed my concern about the menu misrepresentation. She simply said that it is how we make it and hung up.. when you order spicy salmon and spicy tuna from other places it is actually all fish.. so either the owner is cheap or has no clue what constitutes good sushi. Go to rice and roll, or sushi umi. This is a huge waste of money and the rolls are so big and full of rice that you can’t even fit them in your mouth. Obviously the 10 star rating is a complete fabrication. Probably got a bunch of family and friends to rate them on skip. AVOID this place if you can. Especially if you have dietary restrictions. I am really hoping I do not get sick and I will be sharing this experience with all the people in my life that know and...
Read moreWe were the only ones in the restaurant to start. We ordered six rolls. We got a tray of four, and were told the 'last one' was on its way soon. We had to reorder the sixth roll. It was a really, really long wait before it came, because by then, the restaurant was packed.
The wait time to get even our first five rolls was exceptionally long; I can understand if we ordered six speciality rolls, but these were standard rolls.
The sushi itself was okay, if not mediocre. To be fair, I couldn't fully enjoy it because of the wait we had, so I can't review the sushi itself. None of it was bad, though I do recall the tempura roll was cold.
I would have actually given this a few more stars if I didn't see three takeout customers walk in and walk out with their food before we even got our first course. It's clear where their priorities lie. I wouldn't recommend sitting down here, but you might luck out with a takeout order.
Overall, it was a sub-par experience, and I won't...
