Wonderful Taste of Belgium - right in downtown Peterborough! I like to make a habit of waiting until at least the second visit to any restaurant before offering my feedback, good or bad. My first visit to St. Veronus was a great experience, and a pleasant surprise. Now that I've had my second, I can happily report that it was every bit as good. The menu is a really refreshing change from the usual "pub-grub" offered at most restaurant/bars. And yet, they still offer enough variations of familiar stand-bys to please even the least adventurous companion. Everything I've tried -- and I mean everything -- benefits from a whole different level of more complicated recipes, quality ingredients and slow, skilled preparation. The most important ingredient found in all their food is time. Not the herb, but the patience and care given to each dish. You can immediately taste the difference it makes. For example, who doesn't like to indulge in fries once in a while. Well, if you only do it once in a LONG while, save it for St. Veronus. They offer true Belgian-style frites. This is fries the way they were always supposed to be -- and they're incredible. Then there are the soups. Every one I've tried is a wonderful concoction of complex flavours that have obviously been given plenty of time to get to know each other. It's much the same with entrees. You'll be amazed at the deep, rich flavours and tastes. And just as much care and imagination is given to salads and accompaniments. But, of course, I can't forget the beer. In addition to a huge selection of bottled beers, they offer an impressive list of imported Belgian and other draught beers, along with a great menu that includes descriptions of each. The staff is also knowledgeable, and great at offering advice and suggestions. Anyway, I think by now you get the idea. I'm very impressed, and already looking forward to my next visit. Highly...
Read moreThis was my first time eating here and it was for a holiday work lunch. There were approximately 20 people. Pros: food was preordered and was delivered promptly, table set up and service was nice and the overall atmosphere of the place was also good. The majority of folks liked their meals and beverages. Cons: I was in the minority but I didn't like my menu choice which was the duck confit poutine, and small Caesar salad. My issue was the duck poutine was lukewarm at best and the fries were cold and hard. The gravy wasn't piping hot and the cheese curds didn't melt; overall looked congealed. The duck was bland, the fries needed salt and I found a tiny bone in the shredded duck which put me off my meal. The salad had good flavour but it wasn't well dressed. Some of the kale had clumps of thick dressing and other pieces had none. Because the dressing was so thick it wasn't easy to mix or toss the salad yourself in the small bowl they gave you. I don't think my meal is indicative of what this place can do because everyone else enjoyed their food but I might have been a casualty of the mass ordering and the kitchen trying to prep ahead. Service: the service was okay, the server was present but very abrupt not really looking to answer questions or provide information plus and seemed very eager to cash out the party given plates were removed immediately and checks provided as if they had experience with dine and dashers.
Would I go back again, so in my review I gave them 4 stars just due to the fact these issues were probably due to the large party. I was tempted to give a 3 because I've been to restaurants before with delicious hot food, and great service with parties of 20 or more without issues. I probably won't go back again unless it is booked for another work function. Quality check of food and being friendly in addition to efficient I think are things that are...
Read moreMe and some work friends come to eat here about once a month and normally the food is pretty good, they have a great selection of beers however I went today with a friend on january 30th around 2oclock and when we asked to see the drink menu the waitress (blond woman around early to mid 40s) refused to serve us due to her “not feeling comfortable to serve us”. Even after providing two pieces of government issued photo ID each she still would not reconsider with her only reasoning being “I don’t feel comfortable serving you”. This struck me as odd as I have been there many times and have always ordered “le tappe triple” (one of their best beers in my opinion). I was a little annoyed and shocked but assuming it was due to how young we look as we are both 19 kept it respectful sticking with water and if that was all that had happened I wouldn’t be writing this review as I normally really enjoy this restaurant. However after this incident while me and my buddy waited for our food we could hear her talking about us in a quite disrespectful way to other customers sitting at the bar, saying such things as “these kids shouldn’t even be eating here” and “I can guarantee you I won’t be seeing a tip from either one of them” (even though we left a small tip despite this incident) and more. it really rubbed us the wrong way and quite honestly just ruined any enjoyment we might’ve taken from our meal as for more than 20 minutes we could still hear her talking about us being the bar to customers in easy earshot of us. This is the first time something like this has happened here however it left a very bad taste in my mouth and I will no longer be recommending this spot to friends and family as one of my favourite restaurants in Peterborough. I’m normally not one to leave reviews but this was quite embarrassing for us so I...
