We had the worst experience we have ever had at a restaurant in British Columbia. We have been frequent customers of Gillnetter pub to this day. We have always gone at least once a week for Wing Thursdays or Steak Mondays or to celebrate any special occasion we have. Today at 11 am, we decided to go try the breakfasts for the first time; We walked in, sat down and were given the usual menus by a friendly young waitress. This time we were waiting longer than usual to be attend and when another older waitress came, the first thing she said to my wife is ¨identification (ID)¨ with a terrible attitude. My wife did not understand, she greeted and the waitress repeated the same thing about "Identification". She showed her foreign driver's license and the waitress took it without checking it and asked for another piece of identification. We told her that we are tourists and she didn't care, she kept repeating the same phrase without kindness. We ask her to give us time to look up our official foreign IDs in our cell phone app. She didn't give us time and her response was that she couldn't attend to us and she left.
We don't know if this was because we spoke in our language between ourselves when we were deciding what to have for breakfast, a burrito or a breakfast bowl with a coffee.
It is worth mentioning that more young people entered, even younger than us and we did not see that they were asked for identification; and they were treated with kindness. We are 30 years old and we are tourists, we have a foreign license and foreign credit cards with our information. But it was not accepted and we don't know why.
The waitress refused my wife's license in an unfriendly way. Without explaining what identifications we could show being foreigners.
We do not have to carry our passport everywhere, since our license and cards show that we are of legal age.
We did not have even time to ask if we could order to go.
We understand BC and federal laws but the treatment was not adequate; and it was not the same for everyone. If identification is requested, we believe that as in any place it should be requested at the entrance to the place, not give us the menus and wait 20 minutes sitting without being attended.
We want to know if this was racism or discrimination of any kind. We deserved decent treatment, we left without arguing, without making a scandal because we didn't want problems with how it was handled.
We do not want another person to go through the same situation again since it was a very unpleasant experience to see how we were the only ones who where requested for ID and that they asked us to leave in front...
Read moreI was at the Gillnetter last night, I have always loved this pub for the patio alone. Nothing like sitting out there on a sunny evening. When we got there we were taken out to the patio. It was not busy which was nice. We were sat a table and after a few minutes of being there a server came by to tell us that table had not been sanitized yet and she began to clean it, kind of a moot point as we had already sat there.
Our server came out and asked what we would like, I asked her to suggest something as I wanted something fruity and refreshing. She said "I don't' know" and stared at me. I was thinking at first she was just thinking about it but no she had no answer. We ordered some drinks and she walked away. She came back a bit later with our drinks and took our orders. We ordered the calamari and the tacos.
Our calamari came first it looked really good but was quite salty but we still ate it. We ordered another drink and our tacos came out. Honestly first impression they looked pretty good but unfortunately they did not taste that great. I had the fish tacos and one beef. The beef one was ok but the fish one was covered in tartar sauce. Not just a bit but so much that I had to scrape it all off and it filled an entire saucer. The server came by and asked how it was and I said it was ok but way too much sauce. She said "Sorry about that" and walked away. Did not offer any solution just walked away.
We then sat and waited for quite a long time to get another drink and had to flag another server down to get us one. Then waited for at least another 10 min to get our bill and again had to flag another server down to get our bill. We asked that she ask our server to split it in two she said she would, a while after that our server appeared, I thought maybe she had left for the day and nobody told us. She had our bill but it was not split. We paid and left.
I will still go back again as the patio is amazing not sure what I will order though. PS the renovations are great!
UPDATE: I just spoke with the manager at the Gillnetter I have decided to change my review as what she said made a lot of sense. There was a miscommunication about the table seating. She is going to address my concerns and I am...
Read moreThe worst place to have a Christmas Party - do NOT go here if you are expecting to have fun with your team - they despise fun - it is not what they want you to have as they made that clear by the dirty looks and comments they were giving. We reserved months ago and confirmed a Xmas party for this pub, so they knew we were coming and that it was a work party. We thought what a fabulous local pub, lets support our community. At the very start they threatened to take our seating if people did not show up in 15-20 minutes, and kept that harassment up for quite a time and there was no humanity involved - proper cut throat attitude ; which you can imagine was a damper to the start of a holiday work party and so stressful - it was honestly really an awful feeling. The server, a curly blonde haired -proper rude, by the end she became civil, but way too late lady you are mega rude - like did not hold back the negative vibe rude, At least 3 of the other staff stared, glared and made everyone feel so uncomfortable - also note these where not just young kids these were full grown women who with this kind of attitude I can only imagine are sick of people and hate serving. One of the blonde servers - older -dressed in grey patterned pants and black top was so inappropriate and disrespectful that we will most certainly share to everyone our experience and will never set foot in this pub again, Totally unacceptable behaviour which should not be left unchecked. Management seems to have lost all control of their staff that glares stares and makes an astonishingly uncomfortable, dreadful environment for customers in groups, just so disappointing especially during...
