A friend and I ate there yesterday and the table that we sat at, at first was filthy underneath. We moved to another table which was cleaner. I order a California roll and she ordered the assorted sushi plate. My was fine but my friend noticed a very strong fish odor coming from a piece of the raw fish on her plate indicating that the fish was not fresh. She called the server over and discreetly let her know that a piece of the fish was NOT fresh and would like to order something else that was cooked. The server took the food back to the kitchen and the chef came out and demanded that the fish was fresh. My friend calmly explained that one piece was not and she did not feel comfortable eating that sushi as she didn't want to risk getting sick. The chef lost it. She started yelling at my friend saying it was fresh. The chef caused a hugh scene in the restaurant to the point that everyone knew what the issue was. I quickly ate my meal as the chef was causing such a scene and would not let it go. As I was paying for my meal the chef kept yelling at my friend making the whole situation much much worse. I suggested to the server that all they needed to do was offer my friend something else, which she suggested when she sent her meal back, but they too started arguing with me. Very, very poor and unacceptable customer service and we will...

My wife and I brought our family here on a vacation at the recommendation of a friend that lives in Victoria since our normal go-to was closed for the day. I have been to some of the best sushi restaurants outside of Japan, including a Nobu in Moscow and Miku in Vancouver. This place is on the same, world-class level.

Absolutely fresh ingredients, properly sized slices for sashimi and nigiri. Not too much rice in the nigiri. You must order some hamachi here. The miso soup is also top notch, not full of msg or salt.

We had 3 rolls as well (rainbow, caterpillar and house roll) and all three were great. The chirashi is simply massive and can probably feed 2 people. For dessert, we had monkfish liver and it was out of this world. It's like a lighter, fish version of fois gras. Just amazing.

The service was great even though the chef was shorthanded. The decor and vibe were very nice, modern and welcoming. Even though he was swamped, the chef took the time to converse with us as he diligently crafted our delicious meal (We were the table of 7 and the baby). We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

The only two negative reviews I see here on Google were 1 star with no explanation and looks to be from people that are likely competitors. Don't pay those any attention. This place is...

After close to 5 years of ordering pick up at Fudo, and always being really happy with the sushi, I had a really unfortunate experience with the staff last night. It was with the lady with short hair who seems to always wear a hat. Maybe the manager or owner?

My wife and I enjoy pick up from Fudo often, and I always pick up after we get our very young 4 kiddos down for the night. This was we can enjoy our sushi in peace :) Unfortunately that means I am always there for 7:57pm, 7:58pm etc for their early Saturday closing time of 8pm. Last night I told them I would be there right for 8pm, but they still decided to call at 7:58pm as to where I was. Once I walked in, they intentionally turned off the lights, and were SUPER SUPER SUPER rude.

I was there at 8:01pm! 1 min late after years of happy pick ups. Unbelievable. I would have been IN and OUT without issue, but they were so rude about it that we got into a verbal confrontation which is not like me. It's also not like me to waste my time writing negative reviews.

My wife and I will really miss the sushi, but I am unfortunately a man of my word, and will not being going back. I am a business owner myself, and am appalled by...

I remember coming here pre-covid and the place was amazing. It was definitely a great place to eat out. I went there last night thinking about how great it was before. As soon as I arrived, it looked the same but I could tell right away it was different owners and staff. I ordered the miso soup, agedashi tofu, and the vegetable tempura roll. Miso soup was pretty standard. Just like any other average Japanese restaurant. It was served hot, which is good at least. Agedashi tofu was decent with a nice light crust on the tofu, but the topping with dashi flakes didn't taste fresh as it was pretty dry. I know that a vegetable tempura roll is about as Western as it can get, but it was too sweet with the sauce on top and had too much tempura inside. A lighter batter on the tempura rolls I think would be a lot better, similar to how the agedashi tofu is. Service was decent. We were sat down right away but it took a while for the staff to ask us our order. They did check on us and made sure we had everything we needed. I wasn't impressed with the sushi chef being on his phone and not washing his hands after. And the bathroom fan needs a cleaning!

FOOD: This is the best sushi on the south island! Chef Shingo brings personality and a wealth of flavours and inspiring combinations to his creations that shine through in every bite! Each dish is prepared expertly with care and is a feast for the eyes and the belly! SERVICE: Chef Shingo and staff are front and centre for every customer and this place makes you feel like you are coming home to family and friends. It is nice to see a place where each customer is treated to such a personal service. Come for the food and stay for the warmth of the staff. ACCESSIBILITY: The shop is ground level and there are no stairs or steps. The door is a standard pull double door and so wide access is available. The floor is level and the tables and some seating are not fixed with the exception of the long bench seating on the far wall. The bathrooms are in the back through an open archway about 32 inches wide and the door is a wide pull door. The bathroom has assist rails and lots of room. There is no gantry.

I don’t think this place is Japanese owned, but felt authentic. The fish quality was amazing, surprised at the options! I’m very pleased that the menu acknowledges the difference between authentic sushi and fusion sushi (westernized special rolls). The menu also used the proper Japanese words for the type of fish and sushi (aburi, nigiri, maki, etc.). They also had ramen and donburi dishes that sounded good. Beware when the sushi menu says MP (market price) instead of the price, it means that it varies on quality of fish you choose (like bluefin tuna) is very expensive so you won’t know price until after you eat it. Overall good experience the staff were nice and it’s a small restaurant but welcoming. Only funny thing to say is they have little samurai figures around the store and mural of Japanese samurai that looks clearly printed out it’s a bit blurry hahašŸ˜‚ P.S in the photos I had a Sapporo beer, miso soup, B.C roll, ahi aburi, sake nigiri, negitoro roll.
