I went for lunch to Gulberg Tandoor restaurant on Friday, 22 July, 2016. I had visited this restaurant back in 2014 when I visited Vancouver/Surrey and was really satisfied with food quality and service.
This time however, I was immensely disappointed by the food quality. I ordered ‘Chicken Karahi’ and ‘Beef Nihari’. Being from Gujranwala, Pakistan, I am a food lover and had told great things about Gulberg Tandoor to my wife (who is not from Pakistan), who was visiting for the first time. I have tasted subcontinental food in and outside Pakistan in different countries of Europe and also here in North America. I may not be as professional of a chef as one may find in some famous subcontinental restaurants but I can certainly make way better food than I found this time in Gulberg Tandoor.
The chicken karahi was nowhere near what chicken karahi is supposed to look and taste like. It was chicken cooked plainly in tomato puree, while you could clearly see ‘white’ chicken and ‘red’ curry separate, and excessive sweet taste in the dish. It basically tells you that no effort has been put in cooking, chicken had no texture and curry had no taste but only sweetness of tomato puree.
Nihari was even worse. I had never eaten ‘brown’ Nihari in my life before. The flour was not mixed properly in the curry and bits/bubbles of flour were floating on the surface. It seemed obvious to me that some rookie has been trying to make Nihari for the first time by using ready made Shaan spice mix and has no idea what he/she is doing.
I highly doubt if this review will help at all because as long as revenues are flowing in, the management/owners simply does not give a damn. But I truly felt disappointed and felt that authenticity of the food of my culture has been badly abused in a neighbourhood where you have plenty of options to choose from. Read moreI went there on 3 seperate occasions. 1st occasion: I asked the lady if i could get the wifi access, she said no because they didnt have wifi. However, the front door states that they do have wifi. LOL
2nd occasion: I was served by some older, extremly rude lady. I ordered my food and within 5 seconds, I changed my mind. She got upset because the the order went through and she said the chef doesn't like it when customers do that. What bullocks. It was within 5 seconds, I hadn't paid and i was very poliet. The chef then peeked out that little window and glared at me in the most rude manner.
3rd occasion: I asked the young girl at the till if they had some ground chicken option. She replied to me like I was stupid and had no idea what I was talking about. I polietly asked her to speak to the chef. The chef told her that they do and I ordered that. When I got my order, it was wrong, but it was too late because I had ordered take out and I didnt notice until I got home. I was given chicken breast instead of ground chicken.
I gave this place enough chances but everytime I went, i was dissapointed by the rude staff all together. This place is a joke. I will never return nor do I reccomend this place to anyone. Please save your money and spend it else where. Their food is also not as great as some other places in surrey. Please avoid...
Read moreThe Manager is very rude. Raises his voice when I complained and is not a good listener. I booked party of 20 at 5 pm Sunday for buffet and specifically told him what area we would prefer as it's a family function for a celebration. Told me not to worry as he will arrange a nice place for me and my family to be together. When the day came not only did he make my guests wait outside but also arranged an area where everyone would be scattered. One enclosed area was completely empty and he made my guests wait until he cleared out a space. When I called him to ask him why he is making them wait he would talk over me and wouldn't listen. I wish who ever is the owner is reading this because he really needs to train his manager to listen and not talk over clients. The staff is better than him in every way. We have been there with 20, 30, 50, sometimes 65 people and given this restaurant good business each time and to get a treatment like this is absolutely unacceptable and disgusting. I made arrangements with another restaurant the same day and again reg customers there as well and it was amazing the kind of service we received there. My guests were super happy and so were we.
