Parking: I arrived around 8PM on a weekday and found parking a bit difficult as there isn't a dedicated parking area right on the property so you compete with everyone for a spot. We did find the parking options map in the restaurant, which gave us some idea of where we could go for free parking or paid parking just a short walk away.
Location: The restaurant had plenty of seating, with about 8 sitting booths and 7 sitting tables in the main area. Plus the other side of the restaurant having about 7 other sitting areas, which looked to be overflow or rented party space. They had 3 large TV screens that were playing football. There was also washrooms available in the basement by the entrance.
Food: I ordered "Al Pastor" tacos and "Cochinita" tacos. The al pastor was pretty good with doubled up tortillas, packed with meat and ingredients, which were bound to rip with the great amount they give. The meat tasted authentic with it's flavorful middle eastern flavor, staying true to the origin of al pastor meat. The tortillas tasted freshly made, unlike store frozen bought ones you tend to see in unauthentic Mexican restaurants.
The cochinita tacos were a bit of a let down, just being okay in flavour. It tasted more like beef stew but it was very soft, and reminded me of birria tacos without the spicy aspect. These were doubled up tortillas as well.
It came with 2 hot sauces for 4 tacos, as well as 5 lime wedges for the 4 tacos, but they weren't juicy enough so they may of needed to add a bit more. The green salsa wasn't great but did have a nice spicy kick to it that was not over the top in comparison to other green sauces I have tried in the city.
Ultimately, I may return to try another dish considering that I usually get full with 3 to 5 tacos but at Alebrijes, 4 is more than enough, meaning there is a good bang for your buck when it comes...
Read moreAfter trying 3 or 4 Mexican restos during my 6 week stay in Toronto...finally I found one that can truly be deemed 'authentic' and worthy of multiple visits...yay!
Upon being seated, we were served chips and salsa. Right away, I had a good feeling as the home-made tortilla chips were cut thick and cooked to the perfect crispiness. As such, we immediately ordered the guacamole, which was an ample portion, chunky and pretty good. It needed a bit of salt and hot sauce, but was really good nonetheless.
I ordered the chilaquiles with carnitas (again, based on the quality of the chips). It was very good and all three items (chilaquiles, carnitas, refried beans) were good and tasty with plenty of cotija cheese on top. My only complaint was that the beans portion wasn't enough for me.
My gf ordered the quesadilla al pastor. Oh man, the pastor was so damn flavourful...had that 'mexican umami' taste that really enhanced the ample melted queso.
Service was excellent as the entire (and friendly) staff supports one another; dishes came out really quickly. My only suggestion is that everything would have been even better if some pico de gallo was served. Maybe they have it on the menu and we just needed to ask...but perhaps they might consider offering that with the complimentary chips.
I wished I had found this place earlier in my trip and am hoping I can eat there once again before leaving. But, after being let down by so many wannabe Mexican joints in the GTA, I'm thrilled to know Alebrijes Taqueria will be there for my next visit.
Solid 4.5; don't even waste your time with the influencer reccs....they do not know what real mexican food is supposed...
Read moreHad a great experience coming here! They just recently opened up in May and it’s definitely a hidden gem. Tacos are below average price (most are $5 in the city) and they give a pretty good portion. I ordered the birria, cochinita, and the carnitas tacos. For the birria, I requested to have the broth on the side for dipping. It was packed with flavour and the broth was well seasoned. The only suggestion I would make is possibly doubling up on the tortilla to prevent any breakage when dipping! The cochinita was a new flavour for me and it was nice and juicy (I’d also suggest double layering the tortilla on these as well) It was a bit sweet and tangy and it was perfectly complimented with the light orange sauce that was included. The carnitas were a classic, good portion, however they were a tad bit on the dry side. It was nothing that the mild green sauce included couldn’t fix. The woman who greeted us at the front to take our order was very welcoming and our food was ready in 15 minutes. Overall, this place is definitely a hidden gem in the area and I will definitely be coming back for...
