FOOD POISONING ALERT - My whole family got food poisoning from eating at this place. Still puking after 2 days. Stay away from this place. Not worth your time or money.
The food was just a little off in almost every dish ordered, lets begin:
Ma Lai Gao (馬拉糕) - This tasted more like a regular egg sponge cake and was lacking the real flavour that comes with proper proofing of the dough with the real starter/levain needed to make this dish. Not enough skill here, likely making it the "easy" way with little to no proofing and rushing to sell to the customers. Assume this was not the dish causing food poisoning to the family of four that day.
Plain Congee and You Tiao (白粥 油條) - cant say much about the plain congee, but the You Tiao was definately lacking in skill (similar to #1 above). The You Tiao was denser than normal and you can taste the ammonia bicarbonate which should not exist if done properly. Also assuming this was not the dish causing food poisoning to the family of four that day.
Deep Fried Taro Dumpling with Pork (蜂巢芋角) - this came out room temp with the insides cool. This should have come out poping hot but it was cool and bland. Given that it is not pushed in a cart, this was made and delivered directly to you as part of the order, but felt like it was last round's left over dish. Could this be the culprit? who knows.
Deep Fried Squid Tenticles with Spices (五香魷魚鬚) - $8.80 for this dish and it came out room temperature and not crisp to the bite. Another candidate causing the family event?
Steamed Dumpling in Chiu Chow Style (潮州粉果) - This came warm and with the amount of salt in there could have added flavour to items #3 above.
Passing Items
Egg Tarts (酥皮蛋撻) - These were actually done reasonably well with the shell being flakey and able to breakdown and show the many layers making up the puff pastry.
Mango Pudding (芒果布丁) - no issues, its mango pudding... its like making jello for the restaurant...
Side notes: This is a pricier dim sum place but with little quality. Have had dinner here before, again average location, at least our family didn't have issues that...
Read moreWanted to have dim sum at a nice place. Read reviews on line and was not disappointed. First off this restaurant is attached to a mall which might turn off people but don’t let that fool you the restaurant is decorated nicely as a wedding banquet hall and is quite grand looking. There is a small entrance leading to the mall which is not intrusive but main entrance is outside the mall so it looks nice. People greeted us eighth away and sat us at a table. We were assigned a nice gentleman with a suit and since we came for dim sum a paper menu was provided to check off boxes of what we needed. On a funny note we ordered several items as I was in a group of 5 and thought we needed as much. The host told us no- that’s too much and cancelled half of what I ordered. It was a bit awkward at first but when the food arrived he was totally right. Dim sum items typically come in 3 or 4. Tiny issue is when you are in a group of 5 not everyone can get a full piece if we order 1 item. But I have to say the dim sum items were huge much bigger than other places so we split some pieces to share. All items came out piping hot and come out one by one. If it’s your first time for dim sum it’s a bit hard to all start eating at the same time because of how food arrives randomly at your table. But sure enough we had ordered a lot and were full. I did order one extra item. They had these automatic carts that delivered that one item for us which I didn’t realize. It was fun to watch. Tables were clean. Host was very accommodating when we asked for hot sauce water cutlery etc. overall food was delicious. Service was great. Probably price was a bit much for 5 people it was $150 with tax and tip was automatically added which was fine the service was really great but had it not been maybe I would not have liked it. We had leftovers to take home so I think it was worth it. I would like to try it for dinner might be a better option instead of dim sum which is probably a lot more expensive than it used to be. Overall very happy with this place and would love...
Read moreParking - plenty if it's full in front of the restaurant, you can park around the mall area
Spacious - Lots of leg room between tables
Dim sum - delicious (enormous shrimp dumplings)
Restrooms - very clean, it's close to the entrance/exit which I like before you leave the restaurant or while you are waiting for a table
Service - Super busy trying to get a hold of a waiter/waitress but they are friendly when you do get their attention
My only hiccup while waiting for a table: The hostess (short bob with glasses) gave me a #89 for a table of 4. After waiting for a while, I went to follow up with her to make sure my number was not missed. She replied, I will call soon". Shortly after, she called on a group of 4 who actually came in after me. This was a group I remember telling to get a number from the hostess. And this group was given #72. What logic is this? I have #89. We are both parties of 4.
I understand some tables will be called first depending on how many in your party and when a table becomes available. I think they do give VIPs priority seating but I highly doubt #72 was VIP since I was the one directing her to get a number.
After she seated group #72, she came back and gave out another group with #89. What!? I confronted her and asked her why did she seat that group first and why was that group given a #72 when my group came in before that group? And why did she give a #89 again? And when I looked at her reservation log sheet, she didn't even put a note on #89 as a group of 4! I said you didn't mark anything down on my number. She did not apologize but instead directed us to an empty table of 4. Huh???
So make sure you watch what the hostess marks down, especially the woman with the glasses and short bob. Had I not confronted her, my group would be waiting and waiting and waiting...they need a better numbering system considering...
