Sweet Mahal — Restaurant in Toronto

This restaurant is located close to my home and I saw it as one of the better ones. The food used to be decent. I went to get take-out today and I don't anticipate returning. It is absolutely chaotic as soon as you enter the restaurant. There are no adequate directions of where to go to order food or dine-in. The only decent interaction I had was from the lady at the cash register. Even that was poor. I placed an order for take-out, I paid, got the receipt without any direction of what to do next. After about 4 minutes, I asked the lady that was preparing food when my food was going to ready. At that time she took my receipt and placed it in line. By that time at least 2 other people went ahead of me. She then told me it would take at least 15 minutes! It took at leat 25 minutes of my children and I waiting. I wanted a refund about 15 mins in but it was too late. . . so I waited. I ordered the shrimp marsala, plain rice and 2 naans. I would not have even written a review until I just opened the naan package and found 1 naan that was cut into 2 pieces. Seriously??!! It may be a small thing for some people but I paid for the food, I patiently waited, I ignored their mostly terrible customer service, only to be disappointed further by the food. It's carelessness with a very casual attitude about it.

They really should do better. I do not anticipate returning as I will most likely give another establishment...

I usually go to this place when I'm working. I like the food and the interior is very nice and inviting but the staff working there is on another dimension and couldn't care less about their customers. On April 5th, 2023, I placed an order over the phone for 4 separate orders and they only took three orders down (never apologized about the error in person). Upon arrival we wanted to change our order and the staff completed declined to accommodate the change meanwhile it was an easy fix because I wanted only half pound pakoras and the other person in the group wanted to change their order from one pound to half a pound. The staff complicates things, provides no help when approached by first time customer. I'm not sure whats happening here on a daily basis as the staff looks really tired, sad and over worked. Maybe the Owner should come in once in a while and treat the staff like humans and not slaves. Perhaps the staff doesn't get any breaks or days off. I wouldn't be surprised if the owner doesn't even pay them properly. Unfortunately, these small businesses like to crunch the hardwork out of workers to the bone and don't respect their workers at all. I hope the slack gets picked up soon as the restaurant truly has great potential provided the staff gets proper training, respect and learn how to provide better customer service. Nevertheless I will not visit this place for a very long time, possibly never...

Have been here many times, I'll write a thorough review of the items I have tried and the service i have encountered.

The samosas taste great, pastry is fluffy. We drive from far to get them. However, recently we noticed that although they have not increased the price of the samosas, they have significantly reduce the size. They are pretty small.

I would avoid the hakka food, it's super salty and does not taste good.

Sweets are fresh and taste great (prices are good too).

Thali's are good, they have good varieties, the taste of the dishes is not always consistent but it is so much better than the other options out there.

The staff at the register taking orders, need serious customer service training. Not all are bad, there are many friendly staff members that help near the food counter, please have those take order's instead. For a long time your restaurant has had concerns brought to your attention through reviews regarding the horrific front staff behavior and nothing seems to be done about it. They are rude, unwelcoming, and just very negative. You almost want to avoid going to the restaurant as you know you'll have to engage in a conversation with them. Clearly the restaurant has not made changes and not sure if they care to but, do take the reviews seriously as they can deter future customers from coming...
