Excellent bakery that's become my go-to spot for special occasions. Stopped by today to stock up for Sarah's graduation celebration tomorrow - she's finally finished her master's degree and deserves proper baked goods, not grocery store nonsense.
The selection is outstanding: picked up butter croissants, chocolate croissants, and their famous sourdough bread. Everything looked fresh and beautifully presented. The lentil dahl soup of the day smelled incredible, though I stuck to pastries for the celebration. Quality is consistently excellent - you can taste the difference between real butter croissants and the frozen ones most places serve.
Staff were friendly and efficient despite the Saturday afternoon rush. The girl behind the counter even helped me select the best assortment for a graduation party, suggesting their cheese croissants as crowd-pleasers. Good advice - Sarah loves cheese anything.
However, I'm dropping one star for the absolutely outrageous bag charge. Forty cents! FORTY CENTS for a paper bag! I remember when bakeries gave you bags for free, part of the service. Back in the day, you'd walk out of a bakery with your goods properly bagged without feeling like you'd been nickel-and-dimed.
I understand environmental concerns, but 40 cents feels excessive when I'm already spending $35 on pastries. Tim Hortons charges 5 cents for bags. Safeway is 15 cents. This feels like Vancouver pricing run amok - charging premium rates for basic packaging.
Despite the bag situation, I'll be back. The quality justifies the prices, and it's one of the few bakeries in the Commercial Drive area that still makes everything fresh daily. Just going to start bringing my own bag like some kind of European tourist.
Sarah's going to love the croissants, even if they cost me an extra 40 cents to transport them home properly. Sometimes you pay for quality, but basic bags shouldn't be part of that...
Read moreI have been a loyal customer of Upraising Breads Bakery for a long time, regularly visiting your establishment to purchase a dozen muffins each week for my employees. However, I feel compelled to share a concern regarding the sanitation practices I recently observed.
During my most recent visit, I noticed staff handling food items and packaging (such as lids and bags) immediately after handling loose change, without washing their hands or using hand sanitizer. While tongs were used at times, this inconsistent hygiene practice raises concerns about food safety.
I brought this issue to the attention of an employee, who seemed reluctant to address it and dismissed the use of hand sanitizer. When I escalated the matter to the manager(Rick), I was met with an unprofessional and dismissive attitude. Instead of addressing my concerns, the manager stated that staff cannot wash their hands after every cash-paying customer and appeared more focused on questioning my purchase.
As a loyal customer, I am disappointed by this response. Food safety and proper sanitation should always be a top priority, especially in a food service environment. I sincerely hope that you take this feedback seriously and provide additional training to your staff on maintaining proper...
Read moreGot the Irish Soda Bread. Wanted a snack-everything looked good but in this holiday season I thought why not fruitcake. It was delicious and I could taste and see all the ingredients. They used whole nuts which I appreciated over chopped which sometimes disappears in all the flavours. I could taste both almonds and hazelnuts. We also got a pumpkin and cranberry muffin. I think they used whole cranberries instead of dried which gave a nice pop and sourness. The Soda bread isn't sliced like the other breads they have (I forgot to ask if they would slice it), but it was easy to do at home. I could smell the honey and it had a really nice taste/texture, especially lightly toasted with butter on it. With coffee from Fort Langley it was heaven! Very friendly staff. Uprising has a lot of seasonal baked goods right now so check them out.
Another trip I got the Raspberry Rhubarb slice and some Loaded Baked Potato Scones. The Raspberry Rhubarb slice was a very filling treat. It had a beautiful top layer with some coarse sugar and a nicely browned crust. The filling was like a raspberry and rhubarb jam but with pieces of rhubarb. Sweet first then tart. The scones were also delicious. Definitely loaded with cheese, pieces of bacon, and onions. Great for breakfast with...
